Hi Everyone, I have a couple 3ds/ipas questions. 1. Will meshres allow me to control the complexity of models at render time? What I thought it would do is allow me to simplify a very complex model (using optimize) a number of times so that I'd have say 6 models of varying complexity. Then I'd somehow embed these 6 models into the original mesh and select at which frames during my animation they appear. This way when my complex object is 10 miles away I use the highly simplified version, when it fills the camera view I switch to the more complex version. If this IS how it's meant to work, how do I enter the frames at which various models are used?? 2. Can anyone explain how to achieve what I think is called a depth of field effect? I basically want to focus on an object on a tabletop, with other objects in the background out of focus. Then I need to focus on the background objects without moving the camera or adjusting the lighting. What I'd like is a smooth transition from blur to focus – a little like distance cue but not only calculated radially from the camera POV but the ability to focus on a single object with everything around it blurred. Can I achieve this with Studio, or does anyone know if it's being/or has been addressed with IPAS3? Thanks, Andy Roberts BITS Corp.

If I wanted to render the same scene with the 6 embedded objects and let's say it was a 600 frame animation and I wanted obj1 from 0-99, obj2 from 100-199, etc, I would call up meshres select obj1, netrender with a range of 0-99, call meshres select obj2 with a range of 100-199, etc, etc, then put myself in slave mode and walk away. << 2. Can anyone explain how to achieve what I think is called a depth of field effect? >> Sure. Use the Yost Group Blur filter. This lets me automatically defocus all or parts of an image. It works on still images or animations with options including, blur only above a brightness threshold, "racked focus", and is very useful for creating multi level defocusing effects and dramatic transitions within Video Post. jonas[adesk]

Thanks Jonas, I'll try that method with meshres. I'm not sure I'm convinced about the blur filter – I'll take another look at the documentation for it, but I couldn't see how to pass a great deal of information to the routine. If it acts on a brightness threshold, surely I should be able to specify a "brightness controlled" scene. That way I could create a copy of my scene with the objects to focus on being bright – and get it to use that data to blur the rendered scene. Does this make sense?? Can anyone explain how to achieve what I think is called a depth of field effect? >> I refer to this question asked of you, as I have been intending to ask this question for a while: How difficult would it be to create an IPAS routine to (primarily) use existing 3DS functions to simulate DOF ? 1) by analyzing the scene for TARGET, FOCAL LENGTH, & Objects' distances from focal plane, etc.. 2) by prompting user for F/Stop & perhaps even Shutter Speed. 3) by automatically setting up layered scenes to render, blur appropriately, and then composite together – perhaps even using Motion Blur to correspond with and approximate shutter speed. Of course all of this can be done manually in certain situations, but there is one problem: 1) Even with a static camera position, if the camera is elevated above a ground plane, pointing at a point on the GP at less than 180 degrees, you can easily have the problem of needing to vary blur on a *_single object_* with distance. This would of course apply to ANY larger/closer objects which would lie in 2 or more "distance zones". Is there a way to overcome the above scenario via an IPAS routine, and if so – do you or anyone else here think implementing a totally automated routine as outlined above would be useful ? (I do, although most assuredly it would be computationally expensive) Thanks for your time. BILL
