As a new Toaster owner and eager to get myr new Flyer, I was glad to see how
strongly you felt about the Toaster's advantages over some of its competition.
But also curious as to specifically what you saw the advantages to be.
My understanding is that the Fast system, with its revamped dual channel
digital player will offer similar capacities to the Toaster/Flyer for a
reasonably similar price. I h ave heard that Matrox produces very high quality
output. Both these systems seems quite expandable with strong future support. I
have only seen D'Vision once and it seemed reasonable though, I suppose using
DVI technology is older generation; but if the quality is good, and the output
is video as opposed to CD Rom, that's might be okay.
Part of the issue is perhaps what people consider to be reasonable cost
differences. I suppose this depends on revenue expectations. Being new, I have
no idea as to what revenues people expect to earn from using their Amiga/Fast
or whatever for production.
By the way, Joshua Mellicker made a comparison between Fast and Toaster (not
too complimentary to Toaster) on a number of dimensions in the Fast Forum
(MultiMedia Vendors) on June 23rd. Subject was "Why VM". Maybe a Toaster
expert (not me) could review it.

what a great idea! If the message hasn't scrolled off, I for one would love to
see an annotated copy of that message show up here. I'm always curious as to
our relative position vs. the rest of the DTV world.

With the Toaster/Flyer combination you get an Amiga thrown in for free.:^)
Don't forget about the other capabilities of the Amiga that your Toaster
sits in. Do you use ADPro, DPaint, Imagemaster, Anim Workshop, Scala MM,
Etc. Etc. ? If not your at a Great disadvantage. If your not using AP,
save yourself some money and get it.

What else did you expect from a review on the View Machine in the Fast
Forum, of course their product would outshine the Toaster. They didn't
even compare it to NewTek's NLE system. The Toaster is not an editor, and
the Flyer has not shipped. NewTek is noted for last minute additions.

You might want to jump over to the BP+ (Broadcast Professionals) forum, as
well. I think I remember seeing a number of notes over there that were very
critical of the stability and dependability of both VM and Matrox. While I've
personally had my share of trouble with the Toaster, mine appears to be a
fairly isolated case. IOW, the Toaster works, and has for a long time.
I remember when I bought my first Toaster about two years ago, a fired up
Matrox distributor laughed at me and told me how I should've waited another
month for the "Toaster killer" that was going to make my equipment instantly
obsolete…
