Hi Yost Group ! Some weeks ago I sent you a mail where I described an odd effect concerning face-mapping. I haven't received an answer yet. Since you have been very reliable in former times, I assume it got lost. Here it is again: ——————————————– I made some experiments with face mapped materials and discovered an odd effect: I created a simple face mapped material: a window frame with "black" glass, texture mapped only. Then I assigned it to a cube in the material editor: It mapped nicely to the SQUARE faces of the cube. Then I created a special shape in the shaper and imported it as an object. This time every TRIANGLE was mapped, not only the visible edges as in the cube. So what is the difference between an invisible edge in the cube and an invisible edge in the other face ? ——————————————————————— Thanx, Michael

Hi Michael, Your face mapping question is similar to the following.. << Face mapping deals with "quads", but 3DS deals with triangles, so I'm not sure which triangular piece of the quad (upper-left, lower-right, etc.) texture should be mapped to each triangular polygon. I've tried to kludge it by looking at order of the vertex indexes and the <FaceABVisable3ds> flags, but it isn't right. >> Pg. 9-67 of the Ref Man states, "The mapping of the object depends on the construction and shape of the facets in the geometry. If the object is a cube, for example, or a cylinder with flat sides, the mapped area appears once in each rectangular facet, as defined by the visible edges. If the facets of the object consist of triangular faces, such as those in a GSphere, a triangular portion of *either* the upper-left or lower-right corners of the map appear. " So are you using geometry that has flat quads, like a cube, or an irregular shape like the GSphere? If it's like a GSphere, then my understanding, of the above description, is that you cannot be sure what will be mapped to the face by the renderer. jonas[adesk]

Thank Jonas, >> face mapping Reliable as ever. It's not completely clear, but I've now got a grip on it…. BTW, another wishlist item : Would be cool if 3DS would scan the mapping paths AND it's subdirs also, so it would be much easier in quickly adding a whole CD to it…..( "J:\maps" would give me the *whole* WCT for example) Michael

Hi Michael, <<..wish..>> got it.

Unfortunately, our email in-box on Compuserve has basically turned into a black hole until 3DS NT ships this winter. We are barely getting the time to quickly scan the ASOFT message base, but there's absolutely zero time to do personal support for individual messages. If you need questions answered, this is the best (and only) place. I wish that we had 48 hours in a day, but we're barely getting any sleep as it is. Thanks for understanding, – G
