#Tosh T2150CDS read CDR?
13 messages in this thread
I just purchased a Toshiba T2150CDS laptop with a built in CD. I really like
the unit, but after reading some things on this forum I am concerned it will
not read CDR.
I don't have access to any CD-R discs right now, but I plan to buy a recorder
in July. By chance has anyone tried this unit, how do Toshiba CD readers work
in general? Also, if by chance anyone is interested in a laptop with a built
in CD that reads CD-R, send me a CD-R disc you don't need and I will test it
and post the results.
Any information appreciated.

Wow! Someone from Toshiba is actually monitoring this forum! I am very
impressed — aside from the reliability and versatility of the drives, it's
good to know that Toshiba cares, unlike some others who shall remain
nameless…
Welcome, and please stick around.

My pleasure… I don't 'monitor' this forum frequently, but do pop by from time
to time. Please note there is a dedicated Toshiba forum on CIS that offers
support on Toshiba notebooks and some of us help out on the CD-ROM drives (no
official presence, yet).

Stephan,
I noticed your response as the 2150CD model mentor. This model, and its
announced successor (600?) sporting a Pentium 75 and Lithium Ion batteries have
me ready to replace my computer. Just a few quick questions:
Will the disc read a Mode1 track on a Multisession disc (all that the Pinnacle
software can
record–my Zenith PCMCIA based CD-ROM drive has to go back this week for an
upgrade
because it only reads Mode2 tracks)
Can it support simultaneous video on an external display? At what resolution
and color
depth?
Does it support hot-swapping batteries?
Does it autosense voltages for european travel?
How does the externalized floppy work? Does it take power from the unit?
How well does it support Win95 plug N play?
What do you think of the display under florescents? What about in
"sunlight"?
Does it support both "hibernation" (a quick resume auto-shutoff) and suspend
(temporary
power reduction? How long can it stay suspended on batteries and still have
working
life (I currently have a Compaq Aero, which will go for days, and if
necessary,
auto-hibernate).
Thanks in advance–Neil
Dear Neil,
you might check with Pinnacle for a software upgrade. I believe (but cannot
swear to it) that they are now shipping our MM version which will allow you to
record multisession (or non-) discs in Mode 2.

Neil,
The 610CT is not a successor for the T2150. The 610CT has no internal CD and
is a 90 MHz Pentium. The 610T is a notebook PC. The T2150CDT is a laptop.

I have a T4900 with the TFT screen. I see no problem under fluorescent light.
In general TFT screens are useless in sun light.
Toshiba only uses a Resume which does not meet your definition. Toshiba Resume
powers down machine but keeps the memory active. In this mode battery depletes
about 15% a day.
May I suggest a browse thru lib 6 of the Toshiba Forum for specs, etc?

David,
If you'll email me your address I'll send you a CD-R to see what happens. I
suspect it will work fine, though — in general Toshiba drives are very good
(some say the best), although I'm not familiar with that particular model.
Kathy
I found a source for a recordable CD-Rom. I will be checking it out later this
week. Thanks for your offer. I think it is going to work, but I will let
folks here know when I find out for sure.
You're welcome. Be looking forward to hearing your results.

>>how do Toshiba CD readers work in general?
IMNSHO, Toshiba CD-ROM drives are the best, fastest, most robust and reliable
drives available, and have been since 1989. (I still have two 3201s that work
fine, and recently bought a 3501.) I've never had a problem reading CD-Rs in
Toshibas.
Congratulations on your laptop purchase, you lucky guy.
From all the CDRom drives we have here in the office, the Toshiba's are for
sure the most reliable…

David,
<<but I plan to buy a recorder in July.>>
Before you buy the recorder you may want to check out the prices of having
someone else make your discs for you. In many cases it's still cheaper to hire
someone than buy the equipment and you get their experience too.
