#JVC Archiver problems

We have used a JVC Archiver ( old single speed ) for about a year now and
during this time we have experienced various problems reading the CD's produced
-> some very common drives will not read *some* CD 's produced. It seems to be
predominantly large ( > 400 Mb ) ones that cause problems, but this is not
always the case. Below is a summary of findings so far :-
old SONY single speed SCSI OK
NEC triple speed SCSI OK
SONY CDUxx OK
Panasonic (Creative Labs badged ) Fails some
Pioneer 6 stack, quad speed Fails some
Nakamichi 7 stack, double speed Fails some
The situation is becoming intolerable as we are backing up v. important work on
CD, and inparticular cannot read back on our servers CD stackers ( Pioneer or
Nakamichi )
Any advice ? Is this JVC a 'known' problem area ? If we have to we will dump
the JVC and buy a replacement -> any advice on which ones do not have *any*
problems reading back on common CD's

If, as you say, you need to archive critical information, you need a reliable
solution.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the recorder, however, if some players will
read the discs. It has been established that many players do not adequately
handle CD-Rs — and it's not the media or the premastering software or the
recorder's fault, it's the player. Your best solution is to invest in good
players, and stick with a recording system that you have been able to make
readable discs on.

Thanks Kathy, I will bear that in mind.
As you can appreciate it can be quite frustrating as we are in many cases stuck
with the CD's which arrived with the various makes of PC we use, and without a
costly rekitting exercise we are restricted where we can read certain CD's.
Would you have any suggestions for a multi-CD stacker that is *known* to be
good at reading CD-R's ?? bearing in mind we have a Pioneer 6 stack and a
Nakamichi 7 ( -> the Pioneer does appear to be better overall )

You could try a tower configuration that you can populate with your own choice
of players. I think Microtech makes one like that. The One-Off CD Shops are
dealers for them, I think. Call 1-800-340-1633 for info/prices. Another
source for towers/jukeboxes is Todd Enterprises at 1-800-445-TODD. Everything
I've read/heard from reliable sources indicates that Toshiba 3401/3501/3601 is
the best buy for CD-R use.
