Hi all: It's come time to get a bigger more betterer mass back-up system for moving 3DS rendered images from place to place (my place to service bureau). Here's the system I'm looking at picking up. It's an HP 8 gig 4mm DAT drive (HP1533A external) bundled with the RENDER-TO-DAT software from AeroData (gives the DAT a DOS drive letter and makes it an on-line device) (it's in the back of "The Autodesk Multimedia Partner Catalog Vol 2"). Says it can exceed 15MB / minute (should I be impressed?). The guy on the phone boasted that they got 4 gigs off in 45 min (his claim and the through-put numbers dont seem to match.) Questions: 1) Anyone use this thing with 3DS ? (can I really get a 500 MB animation off in about 30 min) 2) Are 8mm DATs better then 4mm DATs ? 3) Is their a better system for get'n 3DS images "from here to their" ? How about it, any words of wisdom anyone? Scott.

<<Here's the system I'm looking at picking up. It's an HP 8 gig 4mm DAT drive (HP1533A external) bundled with the RENDER-TO-DAT software from AeroData Im using the HP1533a (aka Jetstore 6000 ) and it works great. I havnt used the 8mm machines so I cant comment, but in any case I would check with the service bureau to insure compatibility. The other thing is you might talk to Jim Dempsey at Tapedisk ( 414 231 3333 cis 73777,145 ) Their software does a good job of turning a tape into a drive. Also he knows a lot about tape drives; hes the one that recommended the HP a very reliable 4mm drive. Another thing is that 8 gig is with compression which is optimistic when dealing with already compressed files like PAR ani's. Even without compression DAT is very cost effective. Ed

Thanks for the run down, Ed. I will be giving Jim a call. I was sure that their was other software around that did the same thing. Has Tapedisk been around for a while? More importantly, does their driver work with (or are they working a version for) Windows NT (got to look ahead to 3DS R5). The guy are AeroData didn't instill me with confidence when I asked if they were coming out with an NT version. His answer came across, to me, as, "If we get enough requests for it and if we have the time…." >> Another thing is that 8 gig is with compression << Yea, I was wondering about that. 4 gigs is still good. Hope all my jobs require two or three 4 gig tapes <g>.

They're in version 6.22 which I find very stable. As for NT youll have to ask them. I did mention to him that there is going to be a migration to NT around here. BTW their optimum rate of transfer is about 30mb per min. Ed
