#AAS error
18 messages in this thread
I have a 5.1 MB .WAV file that I'm opening in AA Studio. When I open it,
defaulting to 320x240x965fr, I get the following error:
FLIPPER
An error has occurred in your application. If you choose Ignore, you should
save your work in a new file. If you choose Close, your application will
terminate.
If I close, I get the following GPF:
FLIPPER caused a General Protection Fault in module STEALTHT.DRV at 0001:9F7E.
This is obviously a problem with my Diamond Stealth driver.
If I click Ignore 3 times, the program opens and functions until I attempt a
render to several hundred frames whereupon I get the same aforementioned GPF.
If, however, I click Ignore 3 times and then save the .WAV as .AVI, quit and
then reopen the .AVI, I can continue without the FLIPPER errors. I looked for
FLIPPER in both the manual's index and the on-line help, but did not find it.
Can anyone impart some information to me about the cause of this situation?

how big is your swap file, David? -dave

It runs around 150 megs +/-, in addition to 52 MB of RAM. I do pretty much work
in Photoshop which runs up the size of the swap. Doesn't seem to me that swap
space could be an issue, since saving the file as an AVI allows me to work on
it without an error. The WAV file is 5.1 MB, the AVI containing it, that I work
on without a problem, is 14+ MB. Where are you going with the question?

hmm. if AVI file works okay, let's try this… does the .WAV file play okay
using the standard Windows Media Player (Accessories)? if it does, see if the
WAV file can be loaded and played in the SCRIPTOR module and the SOUNDLAB
module. if it works, we may have a bug in the ANIMATOR module which we can
forward to tech support. sorry for the hassle on this, but everythign we catch
on this run stands a chance of getting fixed in the August patch. 🙂

Dave,
If you're becoming an expert or semi-expert (?) on Animator Studio have you
played with the MCI/AVI drivers for the PAR? Got it working? Do you know about
Video For Windows compatibility? I'm not sure which drivers I'm supposed to
have loaded, I know there's a 1.0 and a 1.1e is the highest to date… is there
downward compatibility, some of these AVI's I can even play in the Diamond
Stealth Video Display window let alone anywhere else… just curious as this
seems really odd that avi's may or may not play, depending on which one…
TIA for any insight you can provide on this…

hi John. expert? moi? <gg>
i have seen a lot of discussion here about the PAR (and a lot of wishes for
AStudio to support PAR)… AStudio was not written to support PAR (although the
folks at Adesk are well aware of this) 🙂
AStudio tries to write temp files to the PAR drive (not allowed), but
apparently some have been able to get file to PAR by saving out their movies to
a non-PAR drive first (as a series of TGA images) and then assembling them
using PAR DOS software into a format PAR can use. Someone mentioned that PAR
has a Windows software too. Yet another comment was that someone suspected
AStudio is saving out to 32-bit TGA images when PAR expects 24-bit images.
i would suggest start simple, save TGA sequence of images out to non-PAR drive,
assemble with PAR software for PAR use. hope this works and keeping my fingers
crossed for patch/update in August. 🙂

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the quick response…
>> I have seen a lot of discussion here about the PAR (and a lot of wishes for
AS to support PAR)
Well actually I think the intended purpose of these MCI/AVI drivers is to do
just that, which is why I posed the question. This approach is the same one
that Adobe Premiere people will have to use with the PAR. And it doesn't seem
like it will be much of a burden on the system. I've done the AVI conversion on
150 frame animation and it took just a few seconds… so to me this is
definitely the way to go as AS doesn't have nearly the overhead to deal with as
it does for TGA's. But I have not been able to play these AVI's back which I
think has to do with having the right codec… I as do others need more info on
how this is supposed to work… but the approach that DPS has come up with is
most interesting and should be monitored closely because it has alot of
positive ramifications for working with AS.
If you have any other thoughts or knowledge on the MCI/AVI scenario I'd be
interested… this is rather a new area even though I've got several programs
that can generate AVI, and it seems to be constantly changing as well… the
latest AVI drivers create small images for instance, but I'm not sure what
that's all about because they always looked small to begin with. <G>
John
i'll forward this message to Nik Grant too, see if he knows anything further
about this (and at least bring this to his direct attention). PAR is a _hot_
hot issue, and I know I'd like to see PAR ability in next release/update. -dave
Thanks Dave,
It looks like its all there to make it happen… but I know so little about
these drivers and what I should be able to do with them… (documentation is
non-existent for anything other than Premiere.) If one can create an AVI and
play it back through Ani Studio… which it looks like you should be able to
do, then it seems like you could do what you want with it… the conversion is
fast… but I have not been able to get it to play back on the SVGA screen,
only the second monitor… and this is also with testing of the AVI in other
programs that support AVI so I don't think Ani Studio is the problem in my
case… as I get time I'll play with it more… I really don't expect ANI
format to be supported as it isn't even supported for Premiere… so my guess
is this is the way to go. I plan to call DPS tomorrow or when I get a chance
and see if I can't get some more insight into whats needed.
Thanks,
John

okay. if you do hear any interesting news of AStduio interest with reghard to
this issue, please forward it to us, John. I save everything in case others
have same questions. hope you had a relaxing holiday weekend. 😉

Be glad to Dave, as soon as I discover a way to make it play and record AVI and
also do the conversion, I'll be sure to let you (et. al) know. Although someone
else may already be on top of it…

Hope you did the same… I was supposed to get out of here for a couple of days
but I managed most of today at least. <g>

Dave – My little FLIPPER problem seems to be getting worse. Many files that I
try to open, AVI or, not are generating FLIPPER errors which always eventually
(but sooner and sooner as time goes on) lead to GPFs.
Hey, Autodesk employees, any response to this error report? I have Diamond
Stealth drivers, Adobe Type Manager, a Wacom ArtPad driver and Pro Audio
Spectrum 16 drivers loaded. Nothing else. Windows is v.3.1. What is FLIPPER and
how can I make it stop blowing up? It is severely curtailing my use of the
program.

i'll forward this directly to Nik. Maybe he has something specific on this.
haven't run across a "cumulative" problem except for reduced resource-related
problems (such as a continually building corrupted swap file or virus-related
file corruption).

Thanks you. Since my GPFs are Stealth-related, could FLIPPER be something that
changes video resolution on the fly to allow working on image/avi sizes other
than the current video mode? Or something that samples incoming files down to
the thumbnails displayed in AAS? Just wondered, since I also have 3DS R4 video
problems…

could be. whenever i look at what my time is worth to solve a problem (hourly),
i sometimes find that it is actually cheaper to go out and get a simple SVGA or
equivalent hardware piece and see if that solves the or isolates the problem.
do you have any SVGA boards lying around that you can test this on? probably
take 15 minutes to swap the Stealth out, insert a Trident 8900 or equivalent,
run the program through its paces and see if it behaves. that you're having
trouble in 3DS also hints at something other than the core code (but possibly
including the core code).
there is a patch coming out very soon (i repeat… very soon) which will fix a
number of bugs and wishlist items reported here in this forum. as soon as it's
available, i'll make sure to post obvious info on it. SVGA cards run about $50
these days too… and a good backup piece for any office anyways… just… in
… case. <g> i have a Trident 8900 in the storage and it has saved our behind
several times when a board went out, when we acquired a new board and had any
graphics related problems (makes graphics driver problems a sinch to isolate)
and i think we bought it used for about $10. <ggg>
thanks for your patience on this. if you do have an old cheapie on the side,
give it a resurrection and let us know if it is the Stealth. if same problems
persist, hopefully the patch will fix this.
-dave
Dave – The SVGA thing is a good idea. I'll let you know.
I also have these FLIPPER errors, they only occur on exiting the program
however. I mean every time I exit! it always causes a GPF in the module
MSVIDEO.DLL. Also, when I use the player I get MMTASK gpf's in the msvideo.dll.
secondly…when I try to convert small anims (3megs) from .avi format to .mov
format I get "OLE exception facility 4, error" any ideas?
thirdly..and this is a newbie question I'm sure, I rendered .flc's in
3d-studio, added scrolling titles in AS and then saved as .avi. A 1.3 Meg .flc
turned into a 5.3 meg .avi! when I tried using compression of any kind, it
looked retched! What is the best way to convert 3d-studio .flc's into .avi anc
.mov files? thanks
Brendon – I am having enough trouble with AAS that I cannot be used as a
resource for how to do anything. Flipper errors upon opening the program when
in 24-bit mode and other weird errors when in 16-bit. Can't open some avi
files, takes 15 minutes to open a 31 frame flic file, etc., etc.
I need the update. Is it out yet?
