When I try to start up Animator studio I get Flipper error Close/Ignore.
What ever I choose it crashes windows out to a DOS prompt.
Can you help.

hi Paul. please tell us some specifics on your system… what exact OS are you
using, how much RAM and actual free harddisk space you have, how big your swap
file is, if you're using any memory managers, what your free resources (Program
Manager) are reported to be before you launch AStudio, and what exact graphics
card you are using. this will help us get an idea.

My system consist of the following:
486DX100 1994 Award BIOS PCI/VLB
8 meg Ram, 36 meg swapfile
Stealth 64 VRAM 2meg.PCI
850 meg HD w/80 meg availble + 420meg w/300 available
MS-DOS 6.22/Windows 3.1 I don't use any disk doublers.
I have another 8 meg simm on the way, but it should start up and run with
8 meg just not be able to run better than 320×200 res.
I followed the troubleshooting tips that came with it and set my config.sys and
autoexec.bat according to the sheet.

hi Paul. here's what i have on the Flipper problems concerning this
configuration:

first off, we have had reports of this same exact FLIPPER error from others who
have the with Diamond Stealth 64… apparently a conflict of some type with the
drivers. resolves have included:
a) increase the swap file size. big time.
b) make sure SET TEMP= directory has plenty of space available
c) quit program once in a while to re-initialize work files. (only does this
when application is closed)
d) it should run with 8MB RAM, but the way i often look at system requirements
is "the minimum you can have on a system to just barely get it running"….
kinda like saying a teaspoon of gasoline is a minimum requirement to get the
car running. <g> you really do need more RAM, and 3x swap file… get it up to
50MB if possible.

e) do you get a specific message, something with STEALTH mentioned in it?
several folks have swapped out a good ol SVGA card and found that the Stealth
drivers were the challenge. Stealth/Flipper problems have been forwarded to Q&A
for next patch.

I got it running (sort of). The problem seemed to be with EMM386 with the
inclusion of the Monochrome region in uppermemory. With that taken out it
runs(sort of). I know a lot of people have had problems with the stealth 64
vram card and drivers with a lot of apps, but I usually never have any.
My new problem now is when I start the program it comes up and looks like its
all running but I can't load (open) any files. It always returns the message
"Request for unsupported feature". Why???
I am running Version 1.0, I just bought this so I don't know if there are any
patches or updates yet. I look around the forum and haven't seen anything.

I haven't been able to find the error string you report (I have a utility which
looks for text strings in binary files). The closest I've seen to your
situation was loading a lot of programs, so that my system resources were low,
and then trying to play animations I'd opened in AAStudio. They seemed to be
playing, but the image never changed. This seemed mysterious as I would have
expected an error or something.
Are you running other things? Are your system resources low?

I'm not running any other apps at all. As a matter of fact, I have to cold
boot, then run AAstudio first thing upon Windows start up.
I think my main problem is just simply not enough RAM even though they claim it
can.

i'm writing this down <scribble scribble>… thanks! Yeah, Diamond Stealth has
had probs with other apps. i'm always reluctant to point fingers at any
particular manufacturer though, having seen the incredibly unpredictable
synergy of apps and hardware that run fine by themselves. the mixing and
matching is usually the problem cause.
it's kinda like medicines, you know? by themselves, aspirin and cold medicine
and antihistamines and postnasal drips and cough medicines and stuff probably
are fine. pour all of those into a bowl and drink it down and you don't know
what kinda bugs your system's going to experience. <ggg>

i am clueless with this one. where are the files being pulled from? floppy?
cdrom? harddrive with AAS on it or other harddrive? network drive? also, what
does Program Manager report as available resources when you try opening files?

I called Autodesk and Derik faxed me a list of about 50 files that I had to
delete by hand then reinstall it again. Now it works sometimes. I usually have
to cold boot, then run it first thing upon windows start up.
I think a big part of my problem is just not enough ram though. When I was
getting the flipper errors and still do sometimes it say flipper caused a gp in
QTNOTIFY.EXE. Quick Time for Windows is it?????
Do you know what QTNOTIFY is?
Now as I am working on a file (EDITOR WINDOW) all of a sudden I crash out to a
DOS prompt.

hmmm. not good.

could very well be. RAM is like priority one around here. second is swapfile
size.

16 meg minimum RAM, 4X SWAP file, very large temp area, keep your hard drive
defragged.
I am using the program 6 – 10 hours a day in production with 64 meg ram, over
200 meg swap file, blah, blah, blah.
It's ok. with 16 it will do things as long as you keep the drive clean and a
big swap file.
