#Problem 3DS4/Win95
10 messages in this thread
Thank you very much for your advice about getting 3DS4 to work under Win95. It
is working well except that it seems to be a little slow. Is there a way to
correct this? Thanks again.

You're welcome!

Not that I know of. Has anyone done any speed tests on Win95 vs DOS?
Greg Pyros
Greg,
I had the "final beta" version of Win95 installed on one of my machines and I
can tell you that 3DS is definately slower running as a program under Win95. If
you boot to "DOS" and run 3DS it runs the same as on other versions of DOS.
Under Win95 the graphics are sluggish and render times are 20% longer. I was
using build 347, and have since removed the beta version and reverted back to
WFW 3.11. I had installed a build that was in the high 400's and had to revert
because it would not work properly with my Adaptec Dual EISA SCSI adapter and
my Alladin. It may be that the shipping version has solved some of the speed
problems with DOS app's. We'll just have to wait and see.
Cheers,
Tom
I have run some benchmarks on WIN 95 with 3DS with the file CHEVY.3DS as
follows:
Under WIN 95 – 4 minutes and 1 second
Under DOS mode – 3 minutes and 2 seconds
The 1024 x 768 files were rendered on a 120 mhz Pentium with 64mb.
Windows 95 build #347.
I will run the same test with a newer build soon.

Cal,
Those reflect my results also.

Tom:
Thanks for th Win95 speed info!
Greg Pyros
I've been running 3DS4 under Windows '95 June beta (build 490 as I recall) and
am using a nice Win95 feature to automatically launch 3DS4 in MS-DOS mode as
soon as I click the icon.
The key to this is a not-so-obvious feature under the second tab of the
Shortcut-Properties dialog box. That feature allows the user to specify that
your computer automatically be rebooted in MS-DOS mode prior to running the
chosen application. You even have the option of booting under a special
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT which you can tailor specifically for the chosen
application. You can configure things so that your system automatically
reboots itself back into Win95 Windows mode as soon as you exit your MS-DOS
application.
I find this to be the best of both worlds–MS-DOS performance and compatibility
for 3DS4 in a customized MS-DOS environment (in which I load special Targa and
Vibrant drivers, etc.) which is automatically invoked every time I run 3DS4.
Perhaps this option is widely known, but it was a new revelation for me when I
happened to stumble upon it. I think it's a good option to consider.
Happy animating,
Lee

Good info! I'm sure that some here haven't seen that feature yet!
Greg Pyros
Greg,
Thanks. Hope it helps!

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the tip!
