#Network configuration

Has anybody any experience in setting up Lantastic for a centralized disk
server configuration ? Is it difficult ? How can we have the best 3D-Studio
productivity in network rendering for "big" projects (my .PRJ files are 7-12
Mb, and use approx. 25 Mb of Map files, so I have a lot of timeout problems) ?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

I'm a little confused by this statement. Lantastic is a peer to peer network,
and as such, does not have a centralized server.
Could you ask your question a different way?

"I'm a little confused by this statement. Lantastic is a peer to peer network,

1 – you can decide to have some computers to be clients only (and not server)
which saves some conventional memory.
2 – you can set up Lantastic on one machine to be client and server and to
dedicate 90% of the CPU to treat the communications on the Network. You can add
some extra cache buffers (using Lancache), and use the ALONE program which
dedicates the machine as a server. But I don't know if it gives good results,
and there are so much parameters … I have heard anyway that setting up
Lantastic was far more easier that setting up a Novell Network. This might be
because Novell has far more parameters.
3 – I could try to get some help from the Artisoft forum. But on the 3DS side,
what should be the parameters (timeout, etc…) for such big projects (9Mb .PRJ
file and more than 20Mb of mapping files).
Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, but there is still no "central" server, hence my confusion. Any number of
machines can be clients, servers, or both. In order to be the common location
where the 3DS network files are stored, a machine must have server capability.

I seriously doubt that this configuration would even come close to the
performance and capabilities a true novell client-server network can give you.
Although as far as peer to peer networks go, it seems adequate. My
recommendation would be to base the decision on which network to use on you 3D
Studio rendering needs, not the ease of setting up the network. If you only
have a few machines that you want to network (i.e. around 6 or 7, never
planning on expanding) then a peer to peer would be fine. If you have (or may
someday have) more than 10 machines, I would invest the extra time and
resources now into a true novell network setup. I think it would be worth it in
the long run if this network is going to be heavily used.

The default paramaters are already optimized. You should only change them if
you experience problems.
