#Supra 2400 Problem

I'm having an interesting problem with my new Supra Modem 2400 and Whap! as
well as ACCESS!. It works perfectly at 300 and 1200 baud, but has problems
making more than one connection at 2400 baud.
I previously used a Practical Periphials 2400 SA modem which (although a
little flakey at times) did not exhibit this problem.
I am using the following parameters:
&F – Reset to factory defaults
L3 – High volume
&C1 – DCD ON when carrier present
&D2 – DTR OFF hangs up modem
This is the problem: I can usually make ONE connect at 2400 baud after boot
up. Subsequent connections dial normally, CIS answers with carrier, but the
Supra does not detect carrier. It just sits there. It continues to sit there
while CIS disconnects and the dialtone returns. After a while, Whap! will
timeout and try again. Sometimes the Supra will actually return "NO CARRIER".
Powering the modem off and on has no effect. Exiting Whap! and restarting seems
to fix it. Why? I don't know.
This modem is on a line with one other phone. I did NOT call the phone
company to tell them I was adding the Supra. As far as they know, I still have
and old Hayes 300 and a cheap Shack phone.
I thought I'd get a few opinions before I packed the Supra up and sent it in
for repairs.

I'm also using a Supra. I took it out of the box and used it — no messing
around with factory settings at all other than using ATMDT in my dial string
(the M turns the speaker off).

I also use the Supra with no problems. Could you elaborate on exactly how you
access CIS? (long distance, CIS net, Telenet, Tymenet)? The problem could be
there and not in the modem. There might be a bad line that you hit
occasionally. Also, do you still have the ATZ in your Whap! dial sequence?

David, I use a local 2400 baud CIS node. It is the same node I used with my
Practical Periphials 2400 baud modem. I had a similiar problem with the PP2400
about once a month. The problem occured about 20 or 30 times in the few days I
had the Supra.
I have not removed the ATZ from Whap!, it is in the same configuration as
with the PP2400.
Now that I have threatened to ship the Supra back, the problem has not
occured. Maybe I should keep the shipping box near the modem to remind it of my
threats? <Grin>

Sounds like a flaky modem on your CIS node could very well be the problem. You
might only get that line once in a while. I used to have the same problem at
1200 baud on my local CIS node about 6 months ago. Once I convinced CIS that
they really had a node with the phone number I was using, they looked into it
and fixed it. (I had to resort to calling another close by CIS node to get in.)
I'd suggest that you leave a message in GO FEEDBACK and see if they can locate
a problem.
