David, First, thanks for uploading the MUSICX demo to AMIGAVENDOR, section #10. I've had a chance to play around with it for a while, and it looks great. I had no problem playing my external MIDI synth (CZ) from the program, but I never quite figured out how to set up a track to record with. I was trying to play the metronome track and record an external MIDI track along with it. Could you give me a brief tutorial? Thanks, Nick

Nick, I don't have the documentation on MusicX either, so this may be a strange way of doing it or have some extra steps, but: 1) Reset yourself back to zero time and otherwise set up whatever parameters you want/need. Click record and let the requester come up. DON'T click the go gadget; instead, hit a key on the keyboard… if things start up, you know your MIDI inputs are correct and everything's running. Play around on the keys until you have enough to tinker with, then punch the stop gadget. 2) Now here's the tricky part, I think. It appears that MusicX records into a temporary holding buffer which has to be transferred into an actual track. To do so, click a track so that it highlights, then click the gadget which relates to this (I forget the label; it may be save. It's in the group almost in the middle, to the right/below the transport controls. There's also a discard/erase/delete in the group.) Sometimes it seemed like I had to rock back and forth between the track gadget and the move/save/copy so obviously I'm not hitting the sequence exactly. But once you get it moved over, you will hear it on playback. This might at least let you hear some sounds ASAP. How about someone with REAL knowledge filling us both in as to the appropriate procedure? Rick

Rick (& Nick), You've gotten the hang of it pretty well without a manual. Let me add a point or two. The gadget to transfer the contents of the Edit Buffer (what you are actually recording into) to the selected sequence is called 'Store'. You may also 'Edit' it, but you will have to answer a safety prompt first. If you know that you want to keep what you have, it's best to 'Store' first, then 'Edit'. You may also select 'Preview'. This substitutes the contents of the Record buffer (what you've just recorded) for the current sequence, and allows you to playback the entire performance, including what you've just recorded, without actually trashing the previous contents of the current sequence. If you like the results, you can 'Store' it in the sequence. The 'Delete' button applies to the selected sequence, not the Record buffer. In the Record Sequence window, you'll notice an item called 'Count-In Bars'. Be careful here, because anything, except the first key that you press to start recording, will be played on the first beat of the measure after the lead-in is finished. You'll be very surprised when you hear your first two measures (the default value for count-in) played all on one note! 8) <continued>

<continuation> It is important to set yourself back to zero time. You'll find that Music-X has a memory for where it was last stopped, and you'll end up there quite a bit. It always pays to check the clock before doing things. Hope this clears things up a bit. David

Thanks Rick, I've gotten so used to Pro-Midi Studio, that it 'looks' easy to use, and MusicX looks confusing!! But I do remember the first few days of Pro-Midi use and all the frustration, and I had the docs. I'll give what you said a try, Thanks, Nick
