Hi, I am new to this forum and DEC computers. I have just picked up a new
client that has a problem. Please help!! The machine is a Digital Rainbow
100. It is on a PDP-11 Network.
1. When we intialized a hard drive on the Rainbow, the maintenance program
assigned the drive letter as E. When the machine boots, it will only
recognize drives A-D. How do I get the computer to recognize this drive?
2. Can the PDP file server have a DOS partition? And can IBM machines be
added to the network to run IBM compatible software? This is my first
adventure into the DEC world. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Rainbow is covered in the DEC PC Forum (GO DECPC).
The PDP-11 cannot have a DOS partition; it doesn't run DOS (well… it
actually *does* run DOS, but it's a different DOS than the one you're
thinking of. One of the original PDP-11 operating systems was called
DOS-11, but it has no relationship to MS-DOS).
It's pretty-much fair to say that the PDP-11 is not under active
development by DEC any more, though they still sell a lot of 'em each year
(enough to make a Fortune 500 company all by itself). DEC's PC integration
software, formerly called PCSA and now called LANworks, is not supported on
the PDP-11, nor is it supported on the Rainbow. It is supported on
IBM-compatible PCs, Macintoshes, and Digital's VAX computers (which are
sort of the PDP-11's "big brothers").
What operating system is your PDP-11 running? The machine supports, or
has supported, about a dozen different ones from various vendors over the
past 20 years, with three major ones still supported by Digital (RT-11,
RSX, and RSTS/E) and some variants on one of those (RSX-11M, RSX-11M-Plus,
and MicroRSX).
