A Flip-Flop is a bistable multivibrator. Registers are made up of
flip-flops. What you do is give it an input and it latches that input
(usually to a clock signal) and then you can take the output to see what
the signal was. It can also be used to halve frequencies since the output
will be half the frequency of the input. It is used in counters because of
this also. It is definetly not the same as a hex inverter. A hex inverter
is simply six inverters. Each inverter takes the input signal and reverses
it (i.e. from high to low and vice versa). I can't believe no one at Radio
Shack knew what a flip flop was. The flip-flop is the basic building block
of digital electronics. There are several different kinds of flip-flops
also. There are simple latches, set/reset, and J-K flip-flops to name a
few.
Do not be surprised at the lack of knowledge that Radio Shack employees
have on Electronics. I have posted examples here before that border on the
ludicris (sic?). If they were not so conviently located, I would not buy
anything from them, just to be spitefull.

Don't be so harsh on RS employees. A decade ago their emphasis was on
parts, and then you could find salespeople who were really hardware
hackers. But that was a long time ago.
Except for the occassional hobbyist salesperson, I doubt you'd find sales
types at any general stereo/computer/phone store these days who'd know what
even "TTL" meant.
Of course, YOU could go work there, and raise the RS smart level, eh? Ah,
but then you'd be paid less than a Burger King employee, most likely. I
don't know why customers expect so much from simple sales types. My local
Amiga dealer wouldn't know a blitter from a hole in the ground, but that
wouldn't stop me from buying from them.

Sorry, but I really LOVE being harsh on RS employees. First of all, in
any speciality store I expect the employees to have at least a basic
understanding of their products. RS employees have time and again said
things to me that were so stupid I could hardly keep from laughing in their
faces. I do not expect them to be electronic whizzes, just to have some
idea what they are talking about.
I friend of mine went to work for a hardware store at one time (ACE I
think) and knew little about hardware. But the company had a
correspondence course in hardware and provided monitary incentive for their
employees to complete it. Thanks to the course and his hard work, in a
year or so that man was truly an expert on hardware. Something along these
lines would be helpfull to Radio Shack me thinks.

Yah, a training course would be great for RS employees… unfortunately
they don't do that. There's an awful lot of different stock in an RS
store, and even I (with a background in electronics) found it hard to keep
up all the stuff.
What you _can_ slam them about, is the same thing you can slam car
salesman, computer salesmen, and just about any other salesperson about in
any store: trying to BS their way through a technical explanation <grin>.
Sales people should learn to not try to fake knowledge where there is none

Yeah, I guess I really shouldn't be surprised. As an Computer Maint Tech I
tend to take a simple basic knowledge of electronics for granted. But then
I take reading for granted and I know there are those who can't do that
either.
Not to interrupt, but I saw the topic and figured you might be the people
to ask. I downloaded a file a few days ago that shows a fairly simple
hardware hack that would let me use a 16 mhz 68000 in my A500. (Not that I
would do it. Making a null modem cable was my big achievement, but I have
friends who are able with the iron.:) My question is: Do you or anyone
know if this would really work? I mean, how compatible would it be? Could
I switch it back to the slow rate and have full compatibility? (It has a
switch for that reason, I assume) Would I be Word Processor scroll and
still be able to play Beast II? I know the Amiga does more than games, but
I still would like to play them! Any help would be…. um… helpful!

I've done that kind of modification on other 68000 systems. Although it
worked, othe system boards like tape controllers or memory that was too
slow couldn't keep up. The mod I did changed the entire system clock, not
just the CPU clock. Sometimes you just have to try it and have a good
backup of your disks <grin>. Harry

I've seen the hack you are talking about. At least I'm assuming it's the
one where you add the flip-flop to increase the clock speed. I haven't
done it myself but I've seen messages on BBSes from other who have and say
it works. The biggest problem is simply you are pushing the chips, as long
as the chips will take the extra speed it would work.
Couldn't say about compatibily, but at least the drop to normal speed would
work.
