#3ds and beyond

ALL maps are gettin' coords now!! Things are screaming…sunsets are
bursting, and octagonal italian marble is glistening….It took me awhile
to get this through the thick outer shell, but I think I'm on track.
Kevin's sugg's re: qemm helped alot (thanx Mr. K) Hopefully, you'll all see
the results of my labors in the form of an interesting UL…..
BTW, now that I got ya…..
Any plans for true wraparounds for cubes and such? It gets to be a pain
doing face mapping, and cyl. and sph. mapping give that funny joint stuff
on the top faces…..Just an idea.
How about objects being able to cast shadows on themselves? I get around
this one by cloning the object before the render (Can I hide it and still
get it to shadow it's clone?)
Will there ever be "visible light" (spotlight beams that render when using
a fog map?)
Is there an easy way to make a camera follow its target (other than
defining a path in the shaper, etc). Can the target ever be a parent? This
option would help when doing "straight-ahead" view walkthroughs…
That's it for me…I thank you and Kevin (and the gang) for your help. 3DS
is the best software (sorry r11, but you're 2nd) of the millenium………
Mike, I'm very happy that you're finally up and running fine. Excellent.
Regarding your questions… I can't comment on future releases, but there
are some things in version 1.0 that will handle most of what you asked for.
Objects CAN cast shadows on themselves. We do it all the time. We've got
an entire tape at Siggraph that contains self-shadowing characters.
You can get "visible lightbeam" effects by making a conical beam object and
using Additive transparency on it. Just focus the hotspot and falloff to
be the same size as your cone and it works perfectly. We'll try to get
these working with fog in r2.
As KevinK said, you can make the camera follow its target by slaving them
to the save path and sliding the camera keys back in time. Works perfectly.
Well, I'm off to Siggraph for a week to show off our new tapes and images.
I'll catch you after the 3rd!
