News is that Commodore is building a plant in the Phillipines to assemble
computers and hardware cards. Commodore will invest at least $9.1 million
and export most of the items to Europe.
Commodore is the first foreign computer company to put such a plant in the
Phillipines.
The plant is supposed to open in June 1992.

Knowing Commodore's business history, they'll probably open the plant in
the Philipines just as the Communists stage a major insurrection…

Well, considering the Commodore-64's nickname was (among other things) the
"Commie 64", they'd be right at home.
I would like to argue with their choice of countries, as the P.I. isn't all
that politically stable, but they might have gotten some incentives that I
am unaware of. I'm sure that with the U.S. thinking hard about dumping
both Subic Bay and the other base because of the massive volcano damage (as
well as popular sentiment, P.I. greed, etc.) the P.I. is looking for
foreign investors.
Still, Commodore had a nice quarter (considering Apple LOST money, IBM was
down over 90%, Atari had to sell a plant just to make some change, etc.)
and a nice year.

Yes, CBM had a nice year. It was the first time in 5 or 6 years that they
broke the $1B mark.

The plant is actually located right over a large communist guerilla cave
network intersection where most of the munitions are kept. CBM
misunderstood the negotiators when they talked about putting a real bang in
their production cost picture! ;^}
