ASDG FIRST TO OFFER JPEG IMAGE COMPRESSION FOR THE COMMODORE AMIGA ASDG is first to bring JPEG compression technology to the Commodore Amiga. JPEG modules to become a standard part of Art Department Professional. Provides additional bridge linking Amiga to IBM, Apple and other platforms. ————————————————————————— Madison WI, August 7, 1991: —– ASDG Incorporated, a leading provider of innovative color imaging solutions, announced today that they have brought the revolutionary image compression technology known as JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) to the Commodore Amiga . The ability to save and load JPEG files will become a standard part of ASDG's Art Department Professional in its next release. Using JPEG comression techniques, a true color or gray scale image can be compressed to a fraction of its original size without significant degradation. The JPEG algorithms achieve extraordinary compression results, potentially 80 to 1 or better. Also, ASDG's implementation meets the JFIF standard allowing JPEG files created on IBM, Apple or other computers to be exchanged with those created by Art Department Professional. ASDG's JPEG saver allows the user to specify how much compression should take place. ASDG's JPEG loader can enhance heavily compressed images by applying image processing techniques during decompression. On an A3000, an overscanned (768 by 480) 24 bit-plane image, which uncompressed consumes more than 1.1 megabytes of memory, can be reduced to less than 40K in approximately 30 seconds. The availability of JPEG support is an important step forward as the Amiga is so heavily used in video, print, and other imaging related fields. JPEG's incredible compression capability means that more images can be kept online in a managable fashion or can be more easily transmitted from place to place. I hope you send press releases to EVERBODY, not just Amiga magazines. I talked to an editor at SIGGRAPH and he said they would prin print some, but nobody ever sends them any!

We try to include non-Amiga press in our press list. Could you send us press contacts you think we should have? pk

I'll get you a list of the magazines I know of and let you know.

A few questions about JPEG. As I understand it, there isn't a standard file format yet for JPEG files, in terms of the actual bytes on a disk. Which format are you using? I imagine it's compatible with, say, the JPEG saver in PhotoShop? How helpful is JPEG compression when you need loss-less compression?

John, As I understand it, JPEG is a loss-y scheme…so there'll always be some image degradation, even at small compression ratios. I know that at least one of the Mac JPEG implementations allows you to select parts of an image to receive more (or less) compression than the rest of the image. [Ugh, bad English. <g>] If ASDG's JPEG allows this, then you may still find it useful at times. But there'll still be some loss. -Dave-

Actually, there is a standard for JPEG files called JFIF – which is stated in our press release. I understand that PhotoShop also uses JFIF. JPEG is lossy – you control the amount of loss which can be extremely small so as to be entirely insignificant and yet provide compression between 10 and 20 to one. Depending on implementation, you can get compressions between 5 and 15 to 1 without loss. Look for my article explaining JPEG internals in an upcoming AmigaWorld Tech Journal. pk

How mucho are the JPEG drivers and WHEN are they available? Raman PS.. I'm writing my own GIF<>JPEG and wouldn't mind some help from the PROS.

The JPEG loader and saver will be included as part of the next release of ADPro as well as part of the upgrade existing owners will be offered. pk
