I recently hooked another hard disk up to my Amiga 3000. Using the HDToolBox under WB V2.3, I got the drive configured correctly. I used Quarterback Tools to format the drive. It seems to work just fine. The Icon displayed for the new drive is that of a floppy disk. I'd like the icon to be the same style as that for the original hard disk. I tried a "copy work:.info to work2:.info" but has no effect, even after a re boot. How do I copy the icon to the new drive?

Jay, you need to copy the file "disk.info", then reboot.

Jim: Thanks for the .info, that worked just fine! Since the system recognized the "disk.info" file when I put it on a floppy, I guess that if no "disk.info" file is found a default floppy icon is displayed. Thanks again, -J

Yep, if no disk.info file is found when a new floppy is inserted, or when a HD is mounted the default image is used. BTW, if you want to change the icon for the RAM: disk, you need to copy the icon file from somewhere to RAM: in the startup-sequence before the LOADWB command. -Jim

Jay – It is not the ".info" file that you should copy over. Look for a file called "Disk.info" on the harddrive with the icon that you like. Then copy that file over to the new harddrive. – Roy Pahnke – Casper, Wyomin'

Just what DOES the .info file do? I know what the Disk.info is for (as explained before) but what is the .info file for? Craig Glaser (Software Etc Milwaukee) – via Whap!

Craig, I forget the exact purpose of the .info files, but they're only used by the WorkBench. They're created the first time you open a disk and/or drawer. My recollection is that they contain the information about where to display the window, and the window size when you open the disk or drawer. I do know they get a new timestamp when you snapshot the drawer or disk's window. Don

Don The .info file contains only three pieces of information … a magic number, the date/time stamp of when it was last updated and the names of the proper file.info files in the directory. When you open a window, WorkBench reads the .info file and gets the names of the file.info files from it (rather than reading all the #?.info file names from the directory) … in addition, WorkBench will often re-write this file when a window is closed. WB can live without the .info files, but will create them if it opens a window and doesn't find one. The .info files are responsible for 75% of all disk trashes amongst new users since a new user might well simply close a window and then, knowing he didn't write anything to disk for a long time, will reset or turn-off the Amiga. Meanwhile, some seconds later, WorkBench had decided it was going to re-write the info file and was in the middle of a write at the time! The .info files are there to speed up the icon display (as it doesn't need to read the directory contents) but, in my opinion, they cause more problems than they are worth. The window size information is held within the directory.info or the disk.info files. Mike (Whapping from the UK)

This may have been the info I was looking for a year or so ago. I wanted a program that would sort the icons in alphatbetical order or displayed order and cause them to be displayed in that order. John Scheib (IconMaster, UtiliMaster, JSFind et al) and I were talking about it, but the only thing we weren't sure of was WHERE that info was stored and how WB chose the icons to display in what order.. It's a pain to go through and setup a window of icons, only to have WB insist on displaying them in whatever order it chooses. Hadn't even thought about the problem since then.

Rick – This is a bit off the topic, but I noticed you said you spoke with John Scheib. If you speak to him again, could you ask him how IconMaster fares with the latest 2.0, and if it's broke does he intend to fix it and update registered owners? I have a (not recent) version of 2.0 and the system locks up when IconMaster is run. I am a registered owner. Thanks much … Harry

Rick, It's been a couple of years since I worked on that, but I think the icons are stored in hash order in the .info file. I know that if you delete the file and then get a directory, the file will be recreated in exactly the same order as before – but if you add files, they are sometimes added between existing ones. Sure looked like hashing order to me. Betty

The .info file is not really necessary. It contains a list of the files in a directory in hash number order, and I think it is intended to make it faster to get a directory. To the best of my knowledge, it was never fully implemented. I do hope I'm wrong and that someone will tell us both exactly how it is used. I spent a LOT of time trying to find out several years ago.
