#lines in framestores?!

I just installed System 2.0 toaster software a few days ago–and now I seem
to be plagued by horizontal lines in framestores. Not in frozen images but
only after they've been stored and retreived. It occurs from both live and
tape sources. If I keep saving the image, I'll eventually get one that
looks okay, but loading it into toasterpaint still often reveals a few
small lines.
Anyone else have this problem?

About two weeks ago I began encountering exactly the same problem you have
described: horizontal lines in saved framestores. I called NewTek Tech
Support, described the prblem to them, and indicated that my system
included a GVP Series II 030 combo accelerator board running at 33 MHZ.
They indicated that some of the GVP accelerator boards had this problem
when used with Toaster 2.0 and that they had a software fix which would
solve the problem that they would send to me. That was almost two weeks
ago. I called them again yesterday. I described my previous conversation
to the fellow answering their Tech Support number. He said their shipping
department had just moved and that they would "probably send it to me this
week". Meanwhile, John Gross of Alpha Video and a recognized Toaster
expert tells me that you can avoid the problem by saving the framestore to
RAM then transferring it to your hard disk. Alternatively, you can take
the grabbed framestore into ToasterPaint, and then save it to disk. In
either case, you should see no horizontal lines in the retrieved
framestore. Hope this is some help.

Thanks for the reply! I'll get on the phone to NewTek today and get that
upgrade. In the meantime, thanks for the tip about saving the framestore to
ram. I don't think I would have thought of that myself. It was getting very
frustrating having to save a framestore several times and then _still_
having to edit out a few lines in TP.

I have just made my fourth phone call to NewTek's Tech Support trying to
get them to send me the software fix for the framestore problem. Could you
let me know if you succeed in getting them to send you the software fix?

I got the problem tonight and I WAS saving to RAMDISK, by accident !
I'll put my call in tomorrow. Whoever gets the update first, let us know.
(I'm also using a GVP 030 accel.).

Are you using the AG7750? If so, then the images must be time based
corrected or you will get those lines… It seems as if the toaster doesn't
like the 7750's TBC all that much. Lou

I use an IDEN IVT-7 TBC into the toaster for framegrabs. Thanks for the
info on the 7750s TBC, though. That's one I hadn't heard before and will
definitely want to factor into equip. decisions.

Lou, are you speaking form experiance that the toaster does not like the
ag-7750 tbc? I am currently working with ag-7500's running the signal to
the toaster through an av-5. I am planning to upgrade my 7500's to ag-7650
& ag7750. I was hoping that the tbc in the ag7750 will give better result
that what i have now. Should i need and when i upgrade to a dual tbc, which
would you recomend. I don't care for the computer internal personal tbc's.
I prefer a dedicated external. this way i can correct on the fly. any
suggestions? thanks, george
I was getting lines in framegrabs from the 7750, which were eliminated when
the output from the 7750 was pushed through a kitchen sync tbc…

There is a small "bug" with the Toaster and the ag7750 TBC but it should
not give you lines in frame grabs. Are these lines in the grabbed frame
from the moment of freezing or are they in the saved file? If they are in
the saved file then this has nothing to do with the 7750 but is rather a
product of a SCSI timing problem with some accelerator cards. It could be
that the inclusion or use of an internal TBC could correct this through its
interaction with your Amiga.
The bug of which I spoke is a small glitch that occurs about every 5
seconds or so. This glitch is fixed by running your 7750 TBC with external
synch generated by your input 1 device or a synch generator providing synch
for all devices. If you are doing animation, another way to fix this is to
run the Program out into the sync in, loop it out of sync out, then run it
with a short cable to the input of the 7750. I imagine real video
technicians might not like doing this but it makes the bump go away and I
can't see any bad side effects. Make sure that you have selected external
sync on the little panel at the lower right of the 7750.

You're right. Our local TV station uses AG-7750s with a Toaster. Their
entire setup (including the AG-7750 TBCs and Toaster Input #1) is synced by
a master blackburst/sync generator. They haven't had any problems grabbing
frames.

So far I have made six phone calls to NewTek Technical Support in the five
weeks since I first observed the problem of horizontal lines in the
framestores. My most recent phone call was last Wednesday. Each time I
have been assured that they were sending out the software fix for this
problem. I have yet to receive the software. If you or anyone else
receives this software fix, I would certainly like to know about it. At
this point I am beginning to wonder if a software solution to this problem
exists at all! However, to date I have been able to avoid the problem by
saving to RAM then transferring to hard disk. Since this did not work for
you, perhaps you should try the second approach that John Gross recommended
to me, i.e. saving the grabbed frame to disk from within ToasterPaint.
