Hard disk problems …
19 messages in this thread
Well, my hard drive is geting funny. An arc program bombed the machinge in
the middle of its write. I got a disk not validated message, and something
about a key. I reboot, no validation message but after a while the maching
bombs in the dos library – key allready free freed, I think.
So, I check the CIS file library and there seem to be no disk fixing
programs around – any suggestions? Of course I never tried to use
diskdoctor.
Amiga 2000, GVP A2000 disk controller, Quantum 80 meg driver (DH0: and
DH1:, 40 meg each). 3 meg memory. Amiga dos 1.3, old chips.

Brian,
I found these in LIB 9
REPAIR.LZH/Bin Bytes: 19379, Count: 138, 01-Sep-91
Title : DiskRepair program, fixes many disk errors
Keywords: DISKREPAIR FIXDISK P.ROHRICH
This program is designed to fix errors like "Checksum error in block
xxx","Key xx has a bad header," Key xx already set," "key xxx out of range"
and several others of this type. It is not a general repair program to
recover deleted files, etc., but is very useful for errors of the types
that bring up those dreaded requesters. Author: P.Rohrich

Title : Recover files from corrupt disks.
Keywords: DISK SALVAGE DISKSALV 1.42 RECOVERY DAVE HAYNIE CLASSIC
This is a update and bug fix to the AmigaDos Disk Salvage Program called
Disk Salvage V1.42. Will work with AmigaDos 1.2/1.3 OFS or 1.3 FFS. This
version now searches for the Format command in the Cdirectory that is
needed to format disk during program operation. There also is a teaser
picture of what version 2.0 will look like.

Title : FIXDISK, a disk recovery program
Keywords: FIXDISK RECOVER UNREADABLE DATA
FIXDISK seems like it'll be a good partner for DiskSalv. It can
recover some information from unreadable tracks on a disk. It has other
features that DiskSalv doesn't, but doesn't include everything that
DiskSalv can do. LHOPE.ZIP/Bin Bytes: 29816, Count: 121, 05-Aug-91
Title : LastHope V1.0 DEMO – Great recovery utility.
Keywords: DISK SALVAGE LASTHOPE SFS UNDELETE RECOVER HEADER CORRUPTED
This neat utility is a recovery program such as FIXDISK or DISKSALV.
Only this one lets you recover files from a SFS diskette that don't even
have any HEADER! This is version 1.0 . Crippleware – fee required. Lasthope
is really worth downloading, if you want the best recovery program 🙂

Thank you for your reply. I have Disksalv – it just recovers files, not
repairs them. I downloaded REPAIR.LZH but of all the errors it fixes it
doesn't fix mine! Here is more detailed info: GOMF gives Alert 87000008,
Dos Library, No General Error, Key Allready Free error. The error occurs
consistently when I try to delete the file. LIST says the file is empty.
There is no data I need to recover, all I need to do is delete the file and
its directory. Any ideas? –Brian Simmons, Denver, Co.
Brian,
First thing to do is get rid of GOMF — it generates gurus all on its
own.
-sja
RIGHTO!, Steve. I remember trying GOMF when it came out and it CRASHED
brutally on its own DEMO! A product I quickly forgot.
Frankly, I've never had any trouble that I could fix by removing GOMF. I
don't see the problem.
Brian,
My experience was that GOMF caused problems if you ran an application that
shut down Workbench (done usually to save memory) and then restarted it.
My *guess* was that it then tried to display using the original Workbench
screen, and thus crashed the machine.
I took it out of my system a couple of years ago and haven't missed nor
regretted it. As applications got better, the need for it diminished
greatly.
David
That may be the reason, there. I don't run very many big programs, and I
don't know of any that try to shut down the workbench. I have 3 meg of
memory, and I don't use it up that often. I don't use paint programs. I
guess i've managed to avoid the usage types that aggravate the problem. I
just got 2.0, anyhow. I'll be switching in a month, as soon as I get a new
hard disk controller from GVP. Thanks
Brian,
OK here is my last chance idea. I've done this before with files that won't
delete and it's worked for me. Open a shell window and try this:
You didn't mention the drive number or directory so I'll use the following
as my example:
File to delete will be in MYDIR in drive DH0: its name is BadFile.txt.
DH0: 1> dir dh0: opt i
dh0: 1> c (dir) [RETURN]
dh0: 1> libs (dir) [RETURN]
dh0: 1> MYDIR (dir) e ; this will cause DIR to enter directory MYDIR
dh0: 1> Firstfile.txt [Press RETURN]
dh0: 1> SecondFile.txt [Press RETURN]
dh0: 1> BadFile.txt [type DEL] ; Hopefully this will delete it.
The above is an example of using the interactive mode of DIR.
Dir opt I means perform a directory call but interactively wi.
E = enter directory
DEL = delete
[RETURN] means press the return key
So when you begin the command string you can CD to the specific area first
or or you can start from the beginning of the root directory of the drive.
After each press of the RETURN key you'll be given a chance to interact
with the result You can bypass the directory or file by pressing [RETURN]
or enter a directory by typing an E and then [RETURN], there are other
interactive commands like backing up and quit.
Hope this works, more questions, just ask, If I can help I'll try,
One other thought, is it possible that you have a space somewhere in the
name of this file? Perhaps a leading space or maybe one at the end? If
there is it would be hard to notice in the shell, but try using a DirUTIL
to delete it or rename it. Just a last thought.
Chris
Just tried DIR opt I. No luck. Looks like I will have to reformat or
something. I can reformat just one partition (DH1:) of a single hard drive,
can't I? And no, the file has no spaces in the name.
— Brian
Brian,
Yes, you can reformat a single partition of a hard drive. Sorry to hear
that the interactive didn't work. Did it error out when you tried it on the
file? How about rename didn't work either? How large is the partition?
Just use the either the format command from the shell or in WB like you
would for any disk. FORMAT DRIVE DHn: name SOandSO FFS noicons (if you
don't
want the trashcan, I can't see why anyone would)
Chris
Yea, it just died as soon as I hit return on the del. I haven't tried
rename, yet. The partition is 40 Meg. Thanks for the help.
Certain programs can generate bugs that cause files to become mishashed.
Only direct editing of the affected directory block can fix this.

GOMF!!!!! For ghu's sake REMOVE IT. Pull it from your system. Wrap it in
multiple layers of aluminum foil alternating with a pariffin dip. Surround
this with a triple thickness of lead foil. Use electrician's tape to
mummify this package so it will NEVER leak out. Then carefully bury it at
least 6.2' under ground in a cemetary at midnight on a night with a new
Moon.
(GOMF has a serious bug in it that causes more GURUs and problems than it
solves. It has a timing bug when playing with windows if memory serves. My
system mean time between GURUs improved 100% when I removed GOMF with 1.3
OS.)

Brian,
Your file deletion problem isn't something as simple as the delete flag
being off is it? I can't remember the early part of this thread.
– via Whap!
No, the delete flag is off. Thanks
Latest QBTools is getting good reports. But it is a commercial program. If
it saves your bacon once it may well have paid for itself, though.
{o.o}
Joanne,
Yes, I agree QBTools is a commercial program and I use it, but I don't have
as much faith in it as I once did. IMHO the best way to protect your
valuable data is to back it up. This way your prepared when (and it's
coming) the work copy gets beatup.
BTW is it possible that you reply was misdirected toward me instead of
another?
Chris
Brian:
Download DSALV42.LZH in lib 9 of AmigaUser. That should do the trick for
you.
