#Cooling 2000 Tower

Hello all,
I was thinking of putting a fan into my tower unit to
cool it down a bit. They are readily available at
Radio Shack but I don't know which voltage would be
appropriate or where the best place to hook one into
for power would be.
Any ideas?

Are you having heat-realted problems? The tower should be fine with the
fan in the power supply. But if you really need something more, get one
of the "fan cards" — a full-slot device that draws power from the bus for
one or two fans.
I know they have these for PCs, I think you could buy one of those and put
it in one of your PC/bridge slots.

Hello Dale,
Fan Card? Eh Gads want will they think of next. No my problem is
that my tower is getting a bit full and I operate in a less than
desirable enviroment for my Amiga. The Tower is great but I do wish
to increase its life span.
Is there any way of takeing a 12 volt Radio Shack computer fan and
takeing power from one of my unused power connectors from my power
supply?

Sure. I don't know which of the two wires on the power connectors is 12v,
but they are standard, so if it doesn't say in the back of the 2000 manual
(wierd the schematics and such that showed up there), you could ask at any
repair shop.
Problem is, unless you have a specific component to cool, it's not going
to do any good. If you want to increase life generally with a fan, you
need to increase air *flow* and you can't do that without sucking/blowing
through the case. (A fan card cuts off much of the air space around
itself and kind of gives a "turbo boost" to the power supply fan.) I
can't think of any holes for you to mount the fan over such that it
draws/blows air from outside.
What is your "less than desirable" environment? Hot room without AC?

The Tower has a convient vent at the bottom that would serve
as a great mount point. The case, I guess is well ventelated
but there is nothing drawing the dead air through the case.
As for environment, I cannot leave the air conditioning on 24
hours a day and the humidity and heat get to be a little on
the high side where I live.
I will look at the scematics for direction. Do you know if
pur Amiga Power supplys have a standard PC Power connection
or is Amiga power for Amigas only? If the Power supply is
standard I can ask for a harness plug to be made at a local
electric shop.

The supply is non-standard, the connection is standard. The only thing
non-standard about the supply that I remember is that it supplies 'tick'
to the motherboard.
Again, there is something drawing the "dead" air through your case — the
fan in your power supply. Enclosures are designed such that the power
supply fan draws air through the entire case.

I use a disk drive power extender from Radio Shack to tap the 5v for my
speakers. (There's less 60 Hz humm than with the typical wall
transformer.) No reason why you couldn't get the 12 volts the same way.
Using the extender cable lets me tap in without having to modify the
computer's cable or losing a drive connection.
