Mitre joints

I just got started with 3DS last week so I hope my ignorance of all of
the features of the package can be forgiven. I am looking for an easy
way is the 3D Editor to mitre the ends of two cylinders to 45 degrees
so that they can be joined to form a 90 degree corner. To illustrate

This is what I have… This is what I want!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has some recommendation
on good books about 3DS, please let me know.

There are a NUMBER of ways to accomplish this:
* Select/Vertices all the vertices at one tube end then
Modify/Vertex/Rotate/Selected (having selected local axis first). This
will rotate the circular end of the tube around its center stretching the
sides of the tube appropriately.
* use a block solid that you create just for mitering, possition it at the
appropriate point on the tube, and boolean subtract it from the tube (you
may have to tesselate the intersecting face, first).
* if you have ACAD and AME, use it's boolean operation to do the same as
above (AME's boolean is much less hassle cause you perform the boolean
before meshing the object).
I'd say the first option is probably simplest from a pure 3DS point of view.

In addition to the answers you've already received, if _all_ the angles of your
tubes are to meet at 45 degrees, you can loft the effect. Simple example,:
create a quad and a circle in the Shaper, input the quad as the path and the
circle as the shape. Turn off Tween, turn on Contour and loft. Result is a
tubular shaped quadrilateral with 45-degree bends.

know we 3D Studio addicts would rather spend a few hours toiling than use such
a simple technique <g>?
