#Share SCSI on IBM/AMIGA
8 messages in this thread
I am sharing a 40mb hard drive with an Amiga 3000 and and IBM 486 on a SCSI bus
AT THE SAME TIME. Read the file SCSIAIBM.TXT to learn how.
Where can I found that doccument. I hope I can share HD with Amiga & Mac. Mac
has utiliies for mounting IBM HD. So, SCSI-A-MAC is OK, I hope so…
Please remember that actually sharing a Harddrive is DANGEROUS to your
data on that drive! I too have 2 machines hooked together via SCSI, my
Amiga, and a 486 running NEXTSTEP 3.1, and I don't actually share any
harddrives, but rather I share my CDROM, Tape, and SyQuest drives. By
share, I never access either the tape or syquest drives from more than one
machine at a time, as that could end up screwing up data. The CDROM is a
different story, as it's a read only device, there's no chance of messing
up data, and I've had the drive mounted on both machines at the same time,
had shells open on both machines in the same directory on the CDROM, and
did a directory of the drive at the same time from both machines (I use
the ls command on both the Amiga & NEXTSTEP machines). I did it mostly to
see if it could be done, and it can, both machines get their directories
up in about the same amount of time. I'm assuming that the drive actually
does 2 read operations to the CDROM, but it might be possible that it's
only reading the data once, and sending the data over the SCSI bus, and
both machines are reading the same data, but I'm not sure if this is
what's happening or not.

I see that it is just a adventure. Are you using CrossDos for Amiga->PC-HD?
No. I don't try and access any hard drives for 'sharing' the only device I
use with both that's anything like a hard drive is my SyQuest drive, and I
simply have Amiga cartridges, and PC ones. I've tried mounting the PC
cartridges under CrossDOS, but have never been able to get it flying
right.

Cross-Dos should be able to happily mount a PC formatted Syquest..it works
great with my bernouilli at any rate….this way I can render 90 Mb of
animation files (.TGA) from 3D Studio to the Bernouilli, convert them on the
Amiga side using Adpro into a DCTV anim…and rock and roll!!
Suresh,
Can you give more details on how you got this to work. I've don't
have Cross Dos, but have the AmigaDos 2.1 which has the IBM
read/write support for disks. I've not yet been able to set up a
MountList (this appears to be what's required) I guess with the right
parameters.
Seems to me that my MessyDos SCSI Controller card uses some kind of
Head translation scheme which I cannot figure out. I've got an
Adaptec 1542C with a Syquest 5110C (this is the one that reads/writes
44's or 88's).
This approach to use the same formatted cartridge is a more suitable
alternative for me that trying to 'pseudo' network/share the scsi
device.
I forget where I put the doc in this forum, but in the AmigaVendor forum I know
that it is under the impulse library.
I use CrossDOS on my set-up. You are right that it is an adventure, but if you
follow some simple rules (out-lined in my text file.) you should be ok, though
I still do not feel safe enough about it to put 'perminant' files on the shared
drive. (I have had to reformat it twice in two days) I just use it as a quick
way to transfer files right now.
