Hey Greg! (And others generally around LA) Are you guys all ok? Man, you all really did something to tick off the Man upstairs this last few months, eh? Fire, earthquake — what's next? I heard on NPR some correspondant who lived in Santa Monica saying she had no power and all her pictures and stuff were just glass and debris on the floor. Actually, my REAL guess is that one of you had some horrible deadline to get some animation rendered out, and since you made sure that NOTHING ELSE could go wrong, this earthquake business was the only thing fate had left to throw at you! Am I close?<g> Dave (seriously, I hope you're all ok!)

You really know how to make parties. If things continue that way, I will probably move to California (but will be back to Miami at August— I want to be here for the next Andrew!) All kidding. Glad to hear that you are ok.

Greg, So why didn't you TELL anyone you were working on an EARTHQUAKE ipas?? <g> 'Hope you're all o.k. John

Glad to hear you're OK. I was checking your location out on the map this AM and looking for pictures on CNN but most of the coverage was north of you, near Burbank area. The fact that you have access to CIS makes me feel a little better about the damage in your area. Is Alan near you? Haven't heard from him today.

Don: AlanI is OK, in fact, he called to find out how I was when I didn't get on the forum for my 7:00am call! He is further south, near San Diego, away from the epicenter or the 'quake. Thanks for the concern! Greg Pyros

Greg: I heard that Tanya Harding paid someone off to cause the earthquake this morning just to get herself off the front page for a change. David

Yeah, Don, like Greg said, thanks for the concern. We really seem to squeak by and stay relatively unscathed down here in San Diego County. I hope that doesn't mean someone is getting a "big one" ready for us! Actually, I believe that the major faults take a big turn inland farther south, and the bigger quakes down here should be centered in the desert. If this sounds like wishfull thinking, then you're right!<g>. All I can tell ya is I'm buying a *single* story home, and it's *not* on stilts! LA (especially the San Fernando Valley) is a real mess, however. Perhaps one of the scariest things is that this quake was *not* caused by the San Andreas fault (the one predicted to slip big-time and cause the Big One), and close-by tremblors like this are said to weaken said fault and make said slippage all the more likely! Ooof! Take care,

Ain't California great? Glad to hear you're ok. Didn't think you guys got anything down there in San Diego. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

Nope. Just woke us up at 4:30 AM like the Landers one did. This one came from the same general direction with the same general strength which made me say: "Oh-oh, Better turn on channel 5 and see what the hell happened up there!".

Ah, shucks! I forgot just how far south you and Martin and Rachel actually are! And here, I was concerned about you all! (Martin: Can you convince Andrea that there aren't any earthquakes in Austrailia?<g>) Glad you guys (and our other LA forum members) are all apparently ok. Dave

The thing that worries me is that the seismologists say that this was not the "BIG ONE". They predict the San Andreas is due for a major thrust by the end of the century with a predicted 8.7 magnitude. If that happens the death and destruction will be enormous. My wife's family's houses have received extensive damage, and my sister in-law's parent's house is supposedly destroyed. They don't have water or electricity. And this wasn't the big one. Hmmm….maybe Australia is looking more appealing. Actually, I'm just trying to line up some solid work and I'll be American history <g>. Hope you enjoyed the CD's.

Martin, Come to Kansas with Dave and I, as "You can dodge them there twisters!" <BG> Chuck
#77282From: MARTIN G FOSTERJan 19, 1994 3:05 AM
Chuck, Kansas? Where's that? Is it near Alice Springs? Actually, I think a carload of us (me and some other British students) drove through Kansas and I was asleep. I asked the driver to wake me if he saw anything interesting. He never did <g,d & r>. 3 vital ingredients for an area I am happy to live in: 1) Warm weather 2) High Moutains 3) Ocean within short drive Southern California does well on all 3 counts. To it's detriment it has 3 major strikes against it: 1) Severe, violent crime 2) Earthquakes 3) Pollution Oh well, you can't have everything….next stop Australia.

>> 1) Warm weather >> 2) High Moutains >> 3) Ocean within short drive Yo, Martin, That sounds like New Zealand, not Australia! Lot's of sheep too! Oh well, you're married… <g>

Gus, if I lived in Australia and needed to go skiing or moutain backpacking then I'd fly to New Zealand. It's fairly inexpensive from there. I don't know if New Zealand is warm enough for me, though.

#77383From: David RhotenJan 19, 1994 1:59 PM
Yeah, the CD's were great, thanks. Since you didn't say, I'll assume (hopefully) that apart from property devistation, your relatives are okay (as can be expected, anyway). Now, in Aussieland, all you have to worry about is a dingo stealing the wife in the middle of the night!<g>
#77586From: MARTIN G FOSTERJan 20, 1994 2:39 AM
David, I think the most harm done to my relatives was psychological. One family of relatives won't go back in the house and have fled the area. They are in shock more than anything else. OZ has it's own hazards and many of them are from animals: poison snakes, spiders, crocs, dingos, sharks, psychopathic 'roos etc. Actually, earthquakes are probably quite low on the life-threatening scale in the bigger scheme of things. I'd heard that more people were killed in the Mid-West from the deep-freeze than were in our tremblor.

Martin, Here's one for the trivia books. The DAM at Tuttle Creek resevoir (the State's largest) is built on a known (but in-active! <G>) fault line! Let's hear it for the Army Corps of Engineers! Oh, I'm looking for travel tips! Chuck
#77683From: MARTIN G FOSTERJan 20, 1994 12:27 PM
Chuck, >> Oh, I'm looking for travel tips! << try to fly with only carry-on luggage. That way you'll be out of airports much quicker.<g>. Actually, when I went to Australia I had 2 carry-on bags only. Sped things up quite a bit since I flew up and down Australia's east coast quite a bit. If you go to Australia, Cairns is a must see. It's the "gateway" to the barrier reef and we spent 4 days up there: 2 on the Barrier Reef on a diving boat, 1 exploring up the coast, 1 exploring the town. Avoid their typhoon season which is the December through February, I think. Melbourne on the south coast is well-worth a visit since it's a very culturally, interesting city and it has a really good tram system – I walked mostly. Ask about backpacker's airfares since you can save quite a bit with them. Sidney and Brisbane are certainly worth visiting for a few days or more each. I didn't have enough time to fully check out the Gold Coast and Surfer's Paradise, near Brisbane. It's probably like Miami Beach, only subtract the shootings and add a casino and waves. I liked Sydney's city centre and some of the pub's were excellent – it's very reminiscent of London. Next episode: tips on Western Europe (if anybody requests).

Martin – you forgot bush fires. They almost lost Sydney!! Dave
#77918From: MARTIN G FOSTERJan 21, 1994 1:40 AM
Dave, they almost lost Sydney, huh? Hmm. The news has been full of US disasters so I haven't really heard much about foreign stuff. I'll take bush fires over earthquakes, though, since you usually get a little more warning and a chance to escape.

Hah! I imagine that there are probably both two AND four legged dingos – and not just in Austrailia! Dave
