#Better Pointers?
10 messages in this thread
So… My big question this month is:
If I get a display enhancing board for my 2000 (ie: Spectrum, Retina,
etc.), am I still stuck with a low resolution mouse pointer?
-Steve
The Retina Z3 has a high-resolution pointer feature but I found it
displaced the hot point a few pixels, so I went back to the low-rez
pointer and made it a bit smaller. I have not found it to be a problem
(just slightly down on the aesthetics – I don't notice it anymore 🙂

Thanks DJ,
The reason I asked, is I use a deinterlacer and a VGA monitor on my
2000 & work in Hi-rez 16 color. When using Imagemaster, I find the lo-rez
pointer to be very difficult to select a particular pixel, even when
magnified. I think this relates…

Stephen:
The Picasso has an option for a high rez pointer, and it works just fine
as far as I can tell. If you use a larger size WB however (I run a
1024×768 WB screen) the pointer gets small, and can sometimes be hard to
find on a cluttered (lots of open windows) screen.

Thanks for the info Mike,
Can you make a larger pointer? or are you limited to # of pixels for
pointer image?

Jumping into this thread….
SS >>Can you make a larger pointer? or are you limited to # of pixels for

The Amiga's pointer is a sprite, and the sprites on OCS/ECS Amigas are
limited to 16-bits in width. The AGA chip set Amigas have 64-bit wide
sprites, allowing for wider sprites.
While there is a limit on the width, I believe the height of sprites can
be as least as tall as the screen, or taller.

Is this true even with an RTG board ie: Retina, EGS, Picasso?
-Steve
"Standard" Amiga pointers are limited in width only by the display hardware.
The pointer is implemented with a single hardware sprite. On OCS and ECS Amigas
sprite width is limited to 16 pixels (64 bits with AGA). Hence so is pointer
width.
There is a hack available (BigPointer? HugePointer?) which links sprites
together to create larger pointers, but this is not standard.
I would imagine that on RTG boards pointer size is limited by the intuition
emulations supplied with the boards (no specifics), so it depends what board
you have really.
Any help?
Mat.

it. Etc.

Shouldn't that read
"…don't believe anything you read, or think you may have read,
INCLUDING THIS."

Steve:
With the Picasso you're still limited to the same amount of pixels as in
AmigaDOS, however the 'standard' pointer is smaller than it could be if
memory serves me correctly.
