#SCSI Tape Drive HELP!!!

HELP!!!!!
I bought a used Tandberg 150 meg SCSI tape drive, model TDC3600, and I can
not get it to work. It worked fine in the system it came out of, but no joy for
me.
If I use the DOS command MAGTAPE, I can rewind and retension the tape, but
can not read or write. I have tried numerous drivers, with the same results.
is there some sort of driver needed? I have covered the basics, such as
ensuring proper termination and seperate ID's, but still have had no luck.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

I cannot give you any advice from here as there are many possible causes
for your problems.
I need to know what scsi controller you're using. Maybe it's enough to
replace the ROMs of your controller. Or you could simply use another
backup software.
Maybe you should try the demo of Diavolo Backup, available in Lib 9, Disk
Tools. If this doesn't work, give me a note with a detailed description of
your configuration and I will try to help you.

George: You really don't need any drivers. Most of the PD and commercial
backup utilities access the SCSI device driver directly. All you have to
do is set the backup utility for the device driver name, and the SCSI ID
number for the tape drive. I have a Tandberg TDC3600 myself and it works
fine with QuarterBack.

I've got a Tandberg TDC3600 with a GVP A1291 SCSI adaptor but have had
EXCATLY the same problems as you.
I have however narrowed the fault down to the controller, not the tape
streamer. I've tried 3 different b/u software, 3 different cables, active
and passive termination, no termination, you name it, I've tried it.
If you get it going, let me know!

Have had the same problem. My controller GVP_II.
The fix for me was issuing a 'GVPscsiCtrl 001 (my tanberg scsi addrress)
DCOFF' command. The controller now recognizes the tape drive.

I've got s very similar problem with my Tandberg and GVP controller, but
the SCSI bus can see the streamer, however when trying to backup to it, I
get a "Mode Select" error, any ideas?
What backup s/w do you use?

Try putting the same DCOFF command in your startup and see if that doesn't
help. (I'm referring to the command listed in full in the previous reply.)

Putting DCOFF in the command doesn't help any 🙁 any more suggestions?

You did use the line exactly this way?:
GVPScsiCtrl 00# DCOFF
(where # is replaced by your tape drives unit number).
The command is case sensitive and must be written into your user-startup
sequence exactly as shown. BTW, GVP says this is absolutely necessary
with Wangtek drives.
The one other thing that helped me get mine up and going was to change
(upwards) the number of buffers assigned to the tape drive. Did that in
FastPrep, and went with a value of 64, instead of the default 32.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Guess it run in the blood…got a
frame-off restored 72 TR-6 and 75 Norton Commando in the garage (which
means lots of oil spots on the floor 🙂
