#Problems with 1.7Gig HD
7 messages in this thread
I have recently purchased a 1.7 gig scsi II Micropolis HD for my Amiga 4000 w/
Toaster. I purchased this drive from a supply house, so they have no idea what
an amiga even is. So I was quite dismayed when I had problems formating it.
So I am appealing to this forum, to see if anyone has had a simular problem,
and might have a solution.
The setup:
I have an A4000 w/ 10megs Ram. Two IDE drives, and a 2091A scsi card with a
Toshiba 870meg HD and a new Micropolis 1.7gig drive.
System 3.0
I have used HDtoolbox, to read the drives parameters. It comes back reporting
that the drive has only one head (it has 15) but the capacity comes up as
1683k. Which sounds reasonable to me (converting Million Bytes into
Megabytes).
I partitioned this drive to be one 1024meg partition and the rest as a second
partition.
The problem: I format the first partition, works fine. I format the second
partition works fine, but the first partition is now ruined. If I reformat the
first partition it destroys the second. I have checked the partitioning data
in HDtoolbox, and the cylinders are not overlapping. (for each partition).
Also I seem to be only able to get 400k/s transfer out of this and the toshiba
drive. (there is no memory on the 2091 card).
So I was wondering if anyone else has a simular setup, and if so how they
managed to correct this. Also what Mask and Max transfer values should I be
using.
I purchased this drive as an emergency replacement for my failing Toshiba
drive, as it fails to spin up more and more frequently. So any help you could
give to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
If this is in the wrong forum, please tell me which forum I should
direct this at.
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

Bert,
I installed one a few weeks back (single partition) and have had NO
problems. I'm running on a 3000 however.
I am glad to hear that atleast you had no problems. I was wondering if you
have the same drive and if so, if you could get me what drive specifications
you are using?
I would be interested in: MaxTransfer Value
Mask Value
Start Cylinder
End Cylinder
Total Cylinders
(These values may be found in the HDtool box, if you select partition drive,
and then select advanced options, MaxTransfer and Mask are in a sub-requestor,
which you can get at by pressing the "Change.." button that appears when you
select advanced options. No changes will be made to your drive as long as you
use cancel to exit all the requestors)
Thanks in advance for any info you might send me.
Bert
PS. Are you sure your drive is alright? I did not discover the problem until
the drive became fairly full, and that is when it became most crucial because I
lost a lot of Data. I would recomend backing up your data regularily from that
drive.
Bert,
MICROP 1548-15MZ1078404 3861
MaxTransfer = 0xffffff
Mask = 0x7ffffffe
Start Cyl = 2
End Cyl = 1709
Total Cyl = 1708
and from info:
Taarna: 1632M 368498 2975764 11% 0 Read/Write Taarna
As you can see it's not very full yet.
How many heads do you have your drive set to?
Bert,
re: "How many heads do you have your drive set to?"
Well, I did a 'read config' and got:
Drive Name: 1548-15MZ1078404
Drive Revision: 3861
Cylinders: 1710
Heads: 1 Size: 1673111K (1633 Meg)
Blocks per Track: 1958
Blocks per Cylinder: 1958 Park head where (cylinder): 1710
Vic;
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Thanks for the info. I'll check it out
and get back to you.
