What's the official policy on buying used software? Is it upgradeable?

Used (Pre-Owned?) software is fully upgradable. You need to have a bill of sale, and a letter to send to Autodesk to update the registration. Make sure first that it is a fully upgradable copy. Give the serial number to your dealer (if you don't have one, send it to me) to contact Autodesk to make sure it was not previously reported as lost or stolen, or upgraded. Make sure you get all the original disks, hardware lock, manuals, and CD-ROM.

Thanks Greg, When you say that I need a bill of sale and letter to send to ADesk do you mean the original bill of sale or one made out by the previous owner. And the letter should be something from the previous owner? I'd like to pick up a copy of Ani Pro but Autodesk doesn't have a student discount for this package so we poor students must go scrounging!

Ian: The original would be nice, but I was just referring to a bill of sale from the registered owner to you. Greg Pyros

" I'd like to pick up a copy of Ani Pro but Autodesk doesn't have a student discount for this package so we poor students must go scrounging!" From our Education Dept: "Yes, we have Student Pricing available, but there are lots of exceptions (mainly full time status for some products) and an application process. Please have Ian contact our office to be referred to an education dealer." Ian, you might try calling Nancy Zehring at 415/491-8295. Nik

Thanks Nik, My local dealer said there was only a discount for 3ds (which my life now revolves around. ) Great news for me! Ian.

Ian (and others), I have been following the various threads on Educational pricing, and wanted to drop this tip. Each particular region will have a dedicated AER (AutoDesk Educational Reseller). The standard "commercial" dealers such as myself cannot match the pricing available from the AER's, as they have a quasi-protected market. Anytime you need educational pricing, call AutoDesk and ask for the AER assigned to your area. In high populous areas, there may be several, but in the less populated areas (such as Kansas) there may be only one. We happen to have a very good one for Kansas, and he is one of my best allies. Thought this needed to be added for the educational issues in general Ian, and please don't take it as a personally directed comment. Chuck

PMJI, but here is what we have found in assisting clients with used software purchases. Firstly, it IS upgradeable, provided you follow the transfer of license agreement policies. These policies are as follows: 1) Obtain the transfer agreement from Autodesk Customer Service, you can reach them at (707)794-1450, or from a local dealer. 2) You and the seller need to fill out the form IN TRIPLICATE (yes, 3 forms!), and send them to AutoDesk Customer Service. 3) AutoDesk will perform serial number verification, and return one copy to each of you, and file one copy (thus, the three forms). Remember, when you are dealing with software of this price range, remember to treat it as you would a car, the the license agreement being the title.
