A couple of more things which may be of general interest to Commodore afficandos, but which I don't think I could build a story around for a general readership. Pleasance of C=UK says he is willing and eager to work with CEI as a U.S. distributor should C=UK win the bid for C. He says he would like two U.S. distributors, CEI in the East and someone else in the West. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this one. You have all been extremely helpful. — Dan — Philadelphia Inquirer

Dan, Here is some third hand info for you. (Call Infotronics in Woodbury, CT. for info closer to the source.) Nick, my dealer, spoke to CEI at length during an unsuccessful hunt for 4000s (BTW the one thing that is keeping him going during this period is MANY orders for Flyers. Thanks Newtek!) CEI told him they had differences with C= UK with regard to the direction things should go. When asked if they would be willing to continue to distribute the Amiga if C= UK's bid is accepted – they would not say! …Warp Engine Engaged… -Paul-

Dan, In respect of North American distribution, there has been considerable speculation in the Canadian user community about the future of Commodore Canada. Currently, they are still open for business with a skeleton staff; reports are that their sales were terrific for the last couple of months, but they are now out of inventory. I talked to Doug McGregor, president of Commodore Canada, a couple of weeks back. At that time, he assured me that Commodore Canada was continuing operations for the time being. Warehouse area was being sharply reduced (the "For Lease" sign in front of the building gave a few local enthusiasts some bad moments). Commodore Canada has a stronger dealer network than that found in the US. It has traditionally handled a different product mix from that south of the border. Example: the Commodore MS-DOS product line was quite successful here. Commodore Canada could well be perceived as a significant asset within the bundle. So, when Pleasance talks of US distribution plans, it would be of interest to know whether he visualizes Commodore Canada remaining as an independent facility, or being absorbed into the continental scheme. –Jim Butterfield

In my most recent conversations with Pleasance (not to be confused with Dan Sullivan's more timely report) several weeks ago, I brought up the Commodore Canada situation. He asked a few pointed questions of how I was privy to so much information, and I told him it was based on conversations that I ocassionally have with Doug McGregor. He didn't sound particularly interested in C= Canada. Curious, but otherwise disinterested. Hopefully, that was just a UK vs. US mannerism barrier. –Tim
