Can anyone tell me where I can get the program Speak?
Do you mean the program "Say"?
Steve:
All I know is I downloaded a file called FileReader. It says I need the
device Speak. What is Say?
Say is a program that used to be included with the Amiga OS software. It
can convert text to speach. (They didn't include it in later releases
because of legal problems).
I haven't heard of Speak. Sorry.
Steve,
yes, you have, just not under that name. Look in Devs: for
narrator.device.

When mounted isn't it refered to as SPEAK: ?

Wasn't that taken out of the later versions of the software? I distinctly
remember people copying the narrator.device from older versions of the OS
so they could still use it on later versions.
Yep, it was taken out of either 2.04 or 2.1. (I believe it was 2.1 that it
disapeared.)
It definitely runs fine on 3.0.

"Speak" isn't a program, it's a device. So, for instance, from a shell you
could type…
copy <text file> to SPEAK:
and the file would immediately be read aloud, assuming you have the
narrator.library in place. Haven't tried it, but I suppose you could also
redirect output from applications, too, as in…
date > SPEAK:
Ok…
Both SAY, and SPEAK were parts of the speech software that shipped with
earlier versions of the AmigaOS (versions 1.3 & 2.04). It could read
*text*, and convert the text into speech using the Amiga's built-in sound
system.
Commodore leased this speech software from a 3rd party, and when the lease
ran out, Commodore decided not to renew the lease. The software was
rarely used by commercial software, and worked for only english text.
If you can find a 1.3 or 2.04 system, the files needed are:
– DEVS:narrator.device
– L:speak-handler
– LIBS:translator.library
– :SAY
– DEVS:mountlist (but you only need the SPEAK: entry in the
list)
The SAY program, isn't needed. It is just a program for playing with the
speech. Say, opens a window, inwhich you can type yext, and hear the text
spoken back.
The listing for 'Speak:' in the mountlist file, can be edited into a
DOSDriver file, and placed in DEVS:DOSDrivers for auto-mounting.

Ron,
Thanks for the info. I think I have a copy coming.
Thank again,
