Is anybody out there using 3DS R3 for architectural visualization? Are there
any architects or architecture students out there?
I am setting up a small visualization studio with a group of architecture
students and I would like to exchange ideas, tips, images, models, etc. with
others interested in using 3DS R3 for architectural imaging & animation.
Thanks!

Yes to both!

I am no architect, but I do take data from architects and create animations for
them. I guess that means I do architectual visualization! 🙂

Sure are! <g> I work for a mid-sized Canadian firm and one of my main duties is
the production of 3DS presentation material. We also have some recent grads who
have had experience with the program in their schools.

3DS & Architecture – You bet!
Would be glad to answer any questions on it. What school?

Dear Rafael:
I have been using 3dstudio since its introduction 3 years ago. I am working at
(believe it or not) Rafael Architects in Kansas City, Mo. I have done over 40
seperate models and animations since I've been here. I will be happy to show
you some of how we have used 3dstudio in an architectural setting. Just reach
me thru compuserve if I can be of help.
Gavin:
You must be kidding! Rafael Architects? It must be a great firm!
I would love to see how you have implemented 3D Studio in an architectural
setting. Ive been trying to get architecture firms down here in PR to do so
without much luck. So I'm doing it on my own. I am starting a small
visualization business with the help of some architecture students and we plan
to offer services to architecture firms. Let's see how it goes. . .
Rafael
Yep. I am a grad student at Georgia Tech School of Architecture, and have been
using 3DS heavily for the last year. I also work for the architecture schools
computer department, and there are many students and faculty learning and using
3DS for their work. This year, 2 faculty members will be developing/teaching a
studio in computer visualization, using 3DS, formZ, and several other 2D
packages. Let me know if I can help with any questions.

I studied at the School of Architecture of the University of Maryland/College
Park. Now I'm back in PR starting an architectural visualization business with
the help of some grad students at the University of Puerto Rico School of
Architecture. I've been using 3D Studio and Imagine heavily for the past two
years. Iv'e also worked with Lightwave (which I still believe it beats the
pants out of 3DS in the image quality dept., sorry if I offended anyone. . .)
and Topas.
PLEASE tell me more about the computer visualization studio! I would like very
much to see what you guys are up to!
Rafael
Rafael,
I would be happy to pass on some info about the visualization studio, but I
need to ask the 2 professors that are spear-heading the project to give me some
more info. I am a graduate student at Georgia Tech just beginning work on my
thesis. In the past 2 years, we have had a very active group working on
limited projects with computers as representative tools, as well as design
tools. We are also working with another department on a VR project, focusing
on design advantages/disadvantages in this area. This will be the first year
that an entire graduate studio will concentrate on computer visuallization, and
culminate with a large show at the school (hopefully worthy of display). The 2
professors are Harris Dimotropolous and Stuart Romm. I will be gone for a few
days, but I will try to get some more info and get back to you. Thanks.
Doug

You bet !!! Since I started at an architectural firm in Denver about a year
ago I have done about 30 different 3ds projects with about an hour of total
animation. We don't do alot of photo-realiziam type visualization, we do
mostly quick (max 20 hours including model and processing) single images and
flics. What we do is when we are designing a project we simulatinously create
fairly simple 3d models of the project that we then using in 3dstudio to create
walkthrus. As the project changes the models and walkthrus are changed and
every time we meet with the client (usally weekly) we walk in with a laptop
running the latest walkthru. Clients seem to have a better understanding of
their project when they see a 3d model, rather than just elevations and plans.
The newest tech. we are using, is 3d charetts. On small and tight budget
projects we propose doing design charetts with the client and all user groups
(these usally last 3 days from program to dd drawings). After the project is
basicly flushed out about day two I create a model of the project and some
short animations and images. At the final presentation (day three) i take a
computer and show them the building in complete 3d (from when i get in to the
project to presentation is about 24 hours). Now these are not award winning
animations, but the client does not realize this (we have been getting alot of
great feedback).

About three years ago at the AEC Systems show in Dallas I was on a panel with
Tolek Lesniewski. He was showing some images that the architecture students had
done. The image that really sticks in my mind is a Japanese temple that was set
in the fog-shrouded woods. It is still one of the best student images I have
seen done in 3DS.
I have just begun teaching a 3D Studio course at the University of Houston –
College of Architecture, my alma-mater, and would be interested to know
something about your program. How many students are currently taking the 3DS
course? We bumped the class limit to 16, and are looking to add an
imaging/multimedia (or post-3DS) class next semester. The administration has
warmed up to computers considerably since I graduated, about four years ago,
but they still have a long way to go.

P.S. is Tolek still at Georgia Tech?
Hi Peter,
I am writing from Tech now, and have passed your message on to Tolek. Yes he
is still here, and this is his CIS address (though I am usually responsible for
monitoring this forum). His Internet address is
tolek.lesniewski@arch.gatech.edu. I also showed your message to Lucas Sentosa,
he was the student who did the Temple you referred to. He says thanks for the
compliment. Tolek will get back to you with some answers to the 3Dstudio
classes questions, as he knows more about the numbers of students than I. He is
on his 3rd or 4th year of teaching a 3Dstudio class here. Last year, we held
several weekly seminars on image processing and "post-production" work, open to
any students. These were fairly crowded, and I feel the interest has just
begun to kick in around here. As I said in a message to Raphael, we have just
started a computer visualization studio, and this will really start a new focus
on this kind of work within the design studios as well as in independant
classes. I am curious to here what is happening their? As I said, I'll have
Tolek write you about the 3Dstudio class info.

Doug –
Thanks for passing this on to Tolek. I'm not sure he remembers me as this was a
few years ago, and the industry has re-made itself a few times since. It's
amazing to hear that your school has started a visualization studio. Last year
they tried integrating computers into the third year undergraduate studios.
Unfortunately much of it was window-dressing for the accredidation commitee,
and was discontinued when the design professors complained about "priorities".
On the positive side, enough additional students were exposed to the computer
to force more visualization classes in a year or two. Such is life in academia!
Have a good semester.
– Peter
No problem.
I think that several of the professors have been extremely impressed with the
work that a few grad students have been doing in the past 2 years in 3Dstudio,
and this has helped to bring out some of the related issues. Also, the new
director, Micha Bandini, is interested in pushing the technological
experimentation a lot within the program. I hope the interest is sustained.

Dear Mr. Lesniewski,
I am a former architect student turned computer graphic artist. I am currently
doing work with a interior design firm in New Jersey. I would appreciate it if
you could email me about the image thata your student did ( the Japanese
Temple).
By the way, is there a lot of opportunities with 3d renderings, without having
to animate?? The reason being is that I have one Pentium 90, and it has to run
for days straight just to do some of my walk throughs…do you think the design
process can be visualized just as well with single frame renderings…
Basically I am interested in "before and after" site proposals. For example,
how a proposed site might look in a current site, using photographs….Rel. 4
of 3ds is supposed to have perspective matching… that would be a plus.!!!!!!
Thanks for your time,
Todd Manus
