Hi there all, I have an animation that requires a tool box to rotate, lid to open and then some tools to float in. Pretty basic stuff. The client asked if we could have the front of the box turn transparent after the tools go in. Stupidly I said Sure! Then I sat down to figure out how. Any suggestions for the simplest way to accomplish this feat? Thanks in advance for any help. Best Regards, Loren

Loren, I'm brand new to all this, so check with someone else before you try this. Couldn't you just use a material morph on the lid? If you look in the tutorial, page 16-20, and in 3D Studio applied, page 278, I think you may find what you're looking for. Terry

Loren, I am trying a render on the morph thing myself right now. But, you could also render the animation twice. One with the solid lid, and another with the transparent lid. Then fade one in, and one out in video post to get the solid to transparent morph look. Terry

Thanks Terry, Two good ideas. Gonna try it this afternoon. I think KAI power tools also has an animatable material thing. Will let you know what works. Loren

In addition to Terry's idea, you could also use an animated opacity map on the material used for the toolbox front. Dave

>> have the front of the box turn transparent << I am partial to animated opacity maps. Use vary.sxp and apply as an opacity map to only those faces you need transparent. – Dave

The opacity map! I knew there was something I was missing. I though 3ds had the ability but wasn't sure how to use it best. What is the procedure for animating Op/maps? Loren

Loren, >> The opacity map! I knew there was something I was missing. << vary.sxp is extremely simple to use in this respect. Make a new material just for the front faces which has the tool box material PLUS vary.sxp as the opacity map – in the setup make the start colour pure white, the end colour pure black and then set the frame range (start/end frames) as the range to turn from opaque to transparent. Example: become transparent from frame 80 to 100 – start frame = 80, end frame = 100. Simple and very adjustable. Martin
