#Spline driven animation
10 messages in this thread
Hi there !
I'm a newcomer from Lisbon, Portugal.
I've had some problem finding information about the use of splines in 3D Studio
(I've even
bought the books "Inside 3Dstudio 3 and 4"). Maybe you can help me finding
answers to this
questions:
1) What kind of splines are used in the keyframer ?
2) How can I get DETAILED information A.S.A.P. on this
particular subject ?
3) What other splines (or parametric curves) are used in 3d Studio?
( I suppose 2D Shaper uses Bezier splines)
Thanks,
Joao
While the 2D editor and 3D lofter support bezeir curves in the creation of
POLYGONAL objects, 3D editor and Keyframer do not output or support B-Splines.
3DStudio is a polygonal modeler. There are B-Spline plugins for 3DStudio,
However, they must convert the B-Splines to polygonal before exporting them
back to 3DS. From what I have seen spline driven animation is best left to the
workstations.

Keep an eye on your mailbox as the sorely missed Spline Patch Modeller is being
given away free to all registered users of 3DS. The new IPAS was developed by
Minerva and supposedly will be sent out in about 4 weeks or so.
Autodesk was demoing 3D Surfer at the booth here at SIGGRAPH. There is
mention of this in Gary Yost's uploads from yesterday morning.
You won't believe how well 3DS MAX handles splines, no need for a workstation
any more.

Have you got any other information about this?
Thanks,

Tom:
There is mention of the 3D Surfer program in Gary's uploads. Phil Miller was
doing some demos of the product at SIGGRAPH and would be the man to talk to on
specific details.

Thanks for the info Bob.

Man O Man!!! The demo of it at SIGGRAPH blew me away. It converts the verticies
to a mesh with control points. Just drag points. Like modeling with clay. The
interface looks very intuitive. As a R3 user I'm upgrading to R4 immediately!
This one feature alone is worth it. Very Cool!

Bob,
Sounds interesting, I can't wait to see the interface. If it's an IPAS
though it will have to convert the nurbs to polygons before exporting back to
3DS, right? That would certainly help with modeling but not with animation.
Morphing could prove useless if each converted morph target b-spline has a
different number of polygons in different places.
3DS MAX sounds great. I can't wait to get my hot little hands on a copy.

I wonder if it will be delivered in the same way the tickets to the SIGGRAPH
party were(n't) <vbg>?
I thought that Digimation bought that particular Patch Modeler and bundled it
w/ Details's Metaball Modeler in the OrganiX package. Just how clueless am I
anyway?

I hate to imagine how many people would have squeezed into the Biltmore
Ballroom had the tickets been properly sent out. What a mob scene.
The 3D Surfer deal was a surprise to me, I don't know too much about its
roots.
