Dear all, Does anyone know why if I use a RefMap in a material then it becomes self-illuminated? (ie. I can still see objects applied with materials with a RefMap even if I turn all the lights in the scene off) And is there anyway around it? Thanks Dom

Dom, If your reflection map is up at 100%, then the reflection map tends to dominate the material. Try cranking it down to something more reasonable like 10 or 20. Your Shininess and/or Shininess Strength might be too high as well. Michele

When you specify a reflection map, you are telling 3ds exactly what to show as the reflection. This specified reflection is not scene dependent, therefore the level of illumination on the object does not affect the degree of reflection shown. Clear as mud? Thnk of it this way: in the real world, light bounces off object A and hits reflecting object B. Object B can also have direct lighting, which changes the level of illumination on the reflecting object B, but not the level of reflection of object A. So the level of total illumination on object B can't be used to determine the level of reflection. Under "normal" conditions, you would use an autoreflection map to give you the right level of reflection. Since this is an "abnormal" case, 3ds is doing just what you are telling it to. LAM
