Hey! Good to see you too! You were a mite bit "happy" at the AMMEDIA party! I had a great time with all the friendly 3DSers! You raised some VERY good questions in your post that sent animatable grey clouds over my wild enthusiasm for World Builder. Animatable weather is definately needed. Time to talk to the AnimaTek folks! And along the same vein, 3D clouds would be nice, too. WB has animatable wind in the grass, but none in the trees. I had asked David A. about this and he said it was easy to create in the grasses because it was a fractal thing, but since most of the trees were meshes, they couldn't move. Maybe next rev? As for the grass popping off, I heard the demo animations were created on a beta version of WB and later they made clipping plane adjustments which fixed the problem. I can't comment on grass/objects shifting in the scene (T-Rex scene?) but I attributed most of that to really bad animation. <G> The demo animations were REALLY jerky and badly designed for being just simple fly-throughs. I'de love to put together some demo images for them! The children's book quality of the images is also interesting. When I first saw the images, my head cocked to the side just like dogs do when they can't figure something out! "That's 3D?" "You can move around in that?" Since I work a lot in the Kid's toy/game market, I actually don't mind this quality. I can now charge my clients for work that looks like it took weeks with watercolor and colored pencils, when it only took me a 4 hour session in World Builder! But I would also like to see if I can push it to photographic levels. My first tests involve getting out my National Geographic and Arizona Highways magazines and copying some of their landscape photos. If this takes place you can count on me posting the images! From seeing the tools present in the program, it looks like it would be a piece of cake, but who knows? It could also be something in their renderer giving things that quality. All my best and, oh yeah; the Herbie Handcock video was WAAAY HOT! I'm a fan of his anyway, but what great images and feelings! The stone-mouth-monolith was great! David Gould and I have a question though . . . we also saw clips of the video playing over at the Softfromage booth. What gives Foster?! Enquiring minds want to know: what was actually 3DS and what was done by the other 'inferior' animation programs?! 🙂 Later, Sean

Sean, >> The demo animations were REALLY jerky and badly designed for being just simple fly-throughs. I'de love to put together some demo images for them! << I agree – with those situations it's hard to tell if the problem is in the program or with the poor camera animation. I look forward to users getting their hands on this promising program. People like yourself with an artists eye could do some great work with it. >> we also saw clips of the video playing over at the Softfromage booth. What gives Foster?! << I can say with a great deal of certainty that NO Softimage was used in the Herbie Hancock video. Almost every company seemed to be claiming a part of it – and we did use quite a lot of software, but no Softimage. 3ds was used to model the dancing biped and exported to Kinemation for animation, then rendered in Renderman (probably). 3ds was used to model, animate, and render: the scorpion, the centipede, the sphincter plant, the lamprey plant, and the underwater type plant. Quite a lot in other words. Martin Martin

JJ, >> Was it just me, or did I notice some of the 3DS stuff in the Alias/Wavefront reel? Interesting 🙂 << you are correct, sir. At least, one of the scenes done entirely in 3d Studio (featuring the flowering centipede) and erroneously appeared in their reel. It just shows that with the right artist, it's hard to tell what 3d package was used. Martin
