Michael, Can you say whether or not RayMan will become a 3DSMAX plug-in or not?

Andrew, it`s a few days to early to give a official announcement but remember that I wanted to have a render plug in for 3DSMAX. One of the reason that RayMan 1.0 and 1.5 isn`t a IPAS is that we wanted to have a version which we can very easly convert to Windows NT and a new 3DS API which supports external renderer. As you see RayMan 1.5 supports animation but is still a pure raytracer. Why this? Because you might use the 3DS(MAX) A-Buffer and plug in RayMan 2.0 in the renderer pipeline. So there is no need for us to develope an own A-Buffer… <g>. Sorry, can`t say more details at this time… Michael

Hi Andrew: >>I didn't know there was a V1.5 out. Guess I should pay more >>attention. No, no. We`re only in beta testing but I`ve mentioned the features sometimes before… Michael

I think Yost Group did they right thing. They opened up the program to allow ray tracing, or any rendering type (radiosity!), to be added by third parties. That also meant they didn't have to dedicate time and resources to writing their own ray tracing code when there are others who already have a head start (ie Rayman).

Tim: I still feel this third party approach is a double edge sword. I also think the jury is still out in regards to ray-tracing and MAX, lack of any details on the rendering engine in MAX leads me to believe that the feature list is still in flux. When a wish-list item becomes so popular as to have a vast majority of users begging for the addition of the feature that is when I think the third party method hurts us all – right in the pocket book! Particle systems, ray-tracing, spline modelling, etc. are found in most of the competitor's base packages. With MAX and 3DS I know we are getting splines but who knows about the rest? The third party method gives us options but it would be nice to have more features in the base package as a way of one-stop shopping. The last thing I want is a package where you have to spend 3x the cost of the base package in plug-ins and add-ons just to be able to function properly (not unlike the AutoCAD scenario of today). To be fair, from what I have seen of MAX the approach is to include a great deal of new functionality which was only available as a plug-in addition into the base package. The Yost Group's most popular IPAS routines have made their way to the core of MAX such as optimize (Optimize on steroids actually) and skin. – Bob Ritger

Is skin going to be part of MAX. I got the impression that the only to use skin is MAX would be by using the Skinemation plug-in that comes with Biped. I could be wrong though. Jason

Jason: I believe you are correct about skin, yet another plug-in :-(. – Bob Ritger

That`s exactly what we think. If 3DSMAX supports raytracing (doesn`t matter how) everyone want radiosity. And after radiosity everyone want to have… The new plug in technologie is the only way to make every whish true. In 3DSR4 you have to call a special program (IPAS) to do what you want. In 3MAX you can plug in everything to to program and you don`t know that you call a third-party application. I hope I don`t have to click through a lot of copyright messages and credits when I use a third-party function <g>. Michael
