I'm recruiting arguments. For better or worse, I invited my boss to the Siggraph exhibits. My hope was to reinforce the concept that it does take some investment to achieve a quality product. My problem: TrueSpace 2, simply 3d, etc. Here I was trying to prove that 3ds is great, does this, that, and slices bread, and all these $200-500 programs report to do the same thing. How would you convince the non technical that 3ds is the way to go? I mentioned network rendering, output options, speed etc. I proved it by rendering a single primative on truespace and then doing the same thing on 3ds…look at the times! Thanks for your support and suggestions Todd

Hi! You could show them the Roncarelli report or something <g> -3ds has almost 50% of the ENTIRE 3d market -show him/her the stuff 3ds has done for film eg.-Jurassic Park/Johnny Mneumonic/Virtuosity-much more. -show him all the games it has been used for (alot!) -3ds has all the coolest plug-ins There is of course a ton o' stuff I didn't mention-I'm sure everyone will help ya<g>! -Bill

Ask those companies for their demo reals <bg> and compare. – Phil

<Ask those companies for their demo reals> I forced my boss to play with truespace, talk about creative iconization. "What to I press now?" "find the render button" "which one is that?" "got me" They should have just numbered the buttons and used the help prompt. Actually, they were down most of wednesday…seems a virus was amok in the exhibit hall…or so they say. Todd

Undoubtedly, you get what you pay for. I have 3DS and Truespace. When it comes time to do production work I get out 3DS. I have tried using Truespace and spent to many hour getting nowhere. Compared to Truespace, 3DS is simply a better, more intuitive modeler. However I do prefer Alias Power Animator to 3DS. Which proves my point that you get what you pay for. Tim, I have to second your opinion about Truespace and 3DS. I had mulled over upgrading to TS2 but them MAX was born. This leaves no doubt in my mind where my money will go. Truespace was neat, but not nearly as easy to use. The "Natural user interface" is for me anything but natural. Coming from a Autocad/drafting background, I much prefer 3DS's approach. I suppose for some people the TS2 interface makes perfect sense. But I'm not one of them. There are times that I would prefer a Raytracing renderer ie. refraction, water effects, window reflections. But for now I don't need them bad enough to learn TS. Matt (Active Media Graphics) Y 50 /g fM/

Mat, Each time someone writes a new 3d package they have to come up with a totally new interface to avoid outright copying of another package. It seems to me that there are only so many ways to do it and most of the good ways have been used up. However I am fed up with 3D packages that claim how "usable" they are when I can't get past the interface. I am also an Alias user. And I can see a "workstation" approach to truespace, however it was not implemented as well as Alias. If it had less tools but still retained the functionality of Alias it would be awesome. And probably look something like 3DS MAX. The raytracing in truespace is useless when you can't get your scene the way you want it. The first high end 3d software I used was cubicomp's pc11 and picturemaker or something like that. Truespace totally blows away cubicomp, so maybe it has a place among new users who need more limitations. Nah, start em on 3ds. Timothy <Pixel Pusher> NVision Inc. & Digibotics

Hi Timothy, << .. And probably look something like 3DS MAX…>> It was my impression from the SIGGRAPH attendees that were able to take in the entire show floor that MAX looked and felt different than everyone elses. I wasn't able to check them out myself so my opinion is slightly biased..;-} jonas[adesk]

Easy, no matter what the other packages say, 3D's can do every they do better and faster! Which means that you can be far more productive and gets LOADS more work done in the same amount of time. Plus the anim's and stills will look great and not "Simply 3D" 🙂 Greg
