Quoted outside of the context of the statements I had just made about the fact that NewTek is still repairing and replacing products which have been out of manufacture for many years, that sentence has almost precisely the opposite meaning that it had when in context. I'll have to watch for that in future. So: Regardless of whether we are making and selling new Toasters, we will continue the commitment to take care of Toasters into the forseeeable future, just as we currently continue to repair and replace other hardware products that we have not actively manufactured for several years. Jawbreaker of a sentence, but that gets it all into one soundbite. For the rest, we'll just have to wait and see. Chuck.

<<we will continue the commitment to take care of Toasters into the forseeeable future>>> I think that's all we Amigans can ask for. I for one am keeping my Amiga, cause I think it's a great computer. I use Emplant to run stuff I can't buy for the Amiga, so I'm all set. Just needed to know if I was going to be SOL when my Toaster blew a fuse or something. Thanks. Now up on the CIS Internet via AMosaic! Too bad it isn't with AP. "I use Emplant to run stuff I can't buy for the Amiga, so I'm all set." Not for all that long. Copland, the hugely hyped and maybe in 1997 Mac OS operating system may not be released for 680×0 Macintoshes. Support for 680×0 Mac applications will probably dry up faster than you might expect. Jerry

<<Not for all that long. Copland, the hugely hyped and maybe in 1997 Mac OS operating system may not be released for 680×0 Macintoshes. Support for 680×0 Mac applications will probably dry up faster than you might expect.>> Maybe, however, I just received some benchmark tests from Jim Drew regarding the Emplant Mac run by a 68060. The tests came out equivalent to a Power Mac, and 6.0 of the emulation software will be 100% compatable with the Mac because the emulation will be run in Virtual Mode. Don't forget that Jim D. will also be porting his Power PC version from the Mac to the Amiga when Escom makes the RISC based Amiga next year. I'm not all that worried right now. Maybe in ten years, but not right now. Deciding between an 040 upgrade or an 060 with the Emplant. Chris Shepard: 030/50 Toaster A2000 & MacIIfx via Emplant.

"Maybe, however, I just received some benchmark tests from Jim Drew regarding the Emplant Mac run by a 68060" Have you ever noticed that Drew never provides core data? And that no magazine review has ever equalled the results he claims? Somehow Mr. Drew always seems to outperform the original equipment and now he has a 68060 running as the "equivalent" of a PowerPC. You might want to check Drew's claims very, very closely and see what he has to say about FPU performance. The PowerPC blows just about everything on the market away in FPU speeds – but I'll bet you don't find a word of that – or if you do, that you couldn't duplicate it in your own tests. "Don't forget that Jim D. will also be porting his Power PC version from the Mac to the Amiga when Escom makes the RISC based Amiga next year" Yeah. Sure. And Drew's PC board was so good that Apple was going to distribute it. Remember that? And Drew was going to be making Amiga clones. Remember that? Believe whatever you want to, but Mr. Drew's claims are a little bit too much for me to swallow. Jerry

<<Somehow Mr. Drew always seems to outperform the original equipment and now he has a 68060 running as the "equivalent" of a PowerPC.>> Well, I wasn't suggesting that it would run a Power PC emulation, it'll just be close in speed. The Power PC is faster than the 060. As long as it works, that's all I care about. <<see what he has to say about FPU performance.>> He says all FPU aspects will be supported, unlike Shapeshifter since it disables the FPU. <<Believe whatever you want to, but Mr. Drew's claims are a little bit too much for me to swallow.>> I'll believe him before I believe Alex Amor. 🙂 At least Jim D. hasn't given up on his work. I think that's admirable. Waiting for the MacroSystem's 060 accelerator to be released. Chris Shepard: 030/50 Toaster A2000 & MacIIfx via Emplant.

"I wasn't suggesting that it would run a Power PC emulation, it'll just be close in speed" An interesting feat of physics, I think. "The Power PC is faster than the 060" I wish you could convince some guy in Amiga Users of that. He continues to claim that a PPC604 is the equivalent of a 486DX4. Seriously – he's said it two or three times now. Jerry

<<I wish you could convince some guy in Amiga Users of that. He continues to claim that a PPC604 is the equivalent of a 486DX4.>> Sounds like he needs to get a life. 🙂 I've read that the Power PC is comparable to a Pentium if not faster. Don't know for sure, but that's what I read. Waiting for the MacroSystem's 060 accelerator to be released. Chris Shepard: 030/50 Toaster A2000 & MacIIfx via Emplant.

>>Sounds like he needs to get a life. 🙂 I've read that the Power PC is comparable >>to a Pentium if not faster. Don't know for sure, but that's what I read. By shear numbers power pcs are faster than Pentiums. But since power PC are new, there software is not mature. So in reality Petiums will show better numbers. Also when you are talking power PC are you talking MACs or the IBM version of PPC (which hasn't shipped yet!!!???" If IBM version guess what OS it will have Win NT. One other point the Intel P6 will be out soon. It is designed for multiprocessor operations and wil have cache built right on the chip. Intel claims a 4 proccssor P6 board will do 1000 mips. Hows that for speed at what will be an affordable price.

"By shear numbers power pcs are faster than Pentiums." Actually, PowerPC's are far faster than Pentiums only in FPU operations. In other respects, the Pentiums have a slight speed advantage. Jerry

<<Also when you are talking power PC are you talking MACs or the IBM version of PPC…>> The Mac, of course. I keep forgetting IBM has one. <<Intel claims a 4 proccssor P6 board will do 1000 mips. Hows that for speed at what will be an affordable price.>> It's too bad the PC can't emulate an Amiga like Emplant can do the other way around. I'd have one fast Toaster. Yeah, I could get the PC Toaster, but I aint got $9000 to fork out on it. I'm still getting to know my Toaster and what it can do. I guess I'll have to settle for an 060 when it comes out for the A2000. Waiting for the MacroSystem's 060 accelerator to be released. Chris Shepard: 030/50 Toaster A2000 & MacIIfx via Emplant.

I have an Emplant too, same reason. Jerry may be right about next OS, which might mean upgrades get a bit tougher, but if you're content with the software you've got, where's the problem? If you're not, there's the PC upgrade to the emulation, which should be pretty mature by that time. Chuck.

Chuck, Does Emplant work in the same computer with a Flyer? I got both at pretty much the same time and have yet to get Emplant to work…
#118742From: RAD Moose @ NewTek, Inc.Aug 11, 1995 3:53 PM
I know of some folks using both Emplant and Flyer, and it works if you don't use the Emplant SCSI bus for anything, or if you wait to power up Emplant-attached drives until the Flyer is running, as of last I heard, which was some time ago. Chuck.

<<I have an Emplant too, same reason. Jerry may be right about next OS, which might mean upgrades get a bit tougher…>> As I told him, the Emplant Mac with an 060 will be equivalent to a Power Mac (this came from Jim D.) I'd be skeptical of PowerMac level performance for the Emplant, but I don't doubt it will be good and was pleased to hear the plans he has for 6.0. And when you stop and think a minute, "PowerMac level performance" is not saying "PowerMac Compatibility". At any rate, I'm pleased with the product, pleased with the future plans, and got no end of pleasure out of the fact that aside from the one powerhouse Mac we use for manual production, the fastest Mac to work with in the place was my A4000/040 that thought it was a Quadra 900. Chuck.

Do you have an Emplant and Flyer working in the same Amiga?
#118932From: Chris ShepardAug 13, 1995 4:51 PM
<<Do you have an Emplant and Flyer working in the same Amiga?>> Well….no. And the only reason I say "no", is because I don't have a Flyer. I only have the Toaster. The Emplant and Toaster do work together without a problem though—as long as I'm not in Picasso mode. Deciding between an 040 upgrade or an 060 with the Emplant. Would you know where someone can get a black and white camera to work with your old Digiview 4.0 cart and software? Lot's of us are still 10 years behind 🙂

John, I've got one of the panasonic models (plus a digidroid/color wheel) if you are interested, email me privately for further details. Frank

Other than used, I'm not sure of any sources, though last I checked Panasonic and other companies still make a variety of B/W security cameras. Video companies usually can get these for you, though their ads may not mention them. MicroSearch in Houston may still be able to provide the Electronic Color Splitter, which allowed use of DigiView with an ordinary camcorder. They advertise in Video Toaster User, of course. Chuck.

Thanks,I've read where some cameras were not compatible.

Have the original camera as part of the DigiView package. What do you think it's worth. Still has a great, flourescent light copy stand, software etc. Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances
