During the NAB show, NewTek indicated that current Flyer owners could get the Toaster bay, without the Flyer card, for $5000 less. Therefore, the base bay would be $3000 and the one with the LCD face would be $5000. Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances

>>Therefore, the base bay would be $3000 and the one with the LCD face would be $5000.>> Could someone please refresh my memory… What is the necessity of the LCD screen on the Flyer bay and what is the difference (not in terms of cost) with or without it? Thanks BarryVedros ISI

The LCD screen offers the user field editing and playback without connection to a PC or Amiga. The black buttons are labeled on the screen by the software it runs. Therefore, you can field record an event direct to disk (the disks are removable), edit it and play it back as soon as the event is over. The LCD screen operates as a Toaster preview monitor and the buttons around it are supposedly to give some basic control functions for doing edits in the field. If you don't plan on editing in the field, of even taking it into the field yo probably don't need the LCD. wmc – via Autopilot!

Wanye So all the features are redundant in the software on the main CPU?? The box just acts as an alternate control interface?? I think we all salivating for the ability to take a disk system out into the field (I am) for this price. But I have to get my present Flyer making enough $$ to justify an alternate/redundant system. Thanks for the info BarryVedros ISI

Has anyone thought about a -POSSIBLE PROBLEMS- with taking large, sensitive HDs out into the bumpy, heat-filled, FIELD? We are having enough problems getting our static HDs to work with the Flyer! Also, at this point, as far as I know, there are only 2gig drives that fit into the Flyer bay. Hmmm, ten minutes of recording time — that's real useful out in the field <sarcastic grin>.

Hi Sam – We had a Flyer with a 4GB Quantum and 2 2GB Quantums in a canvas tent in a field, next to a large pool used for sailing 14' boats during the Special Olympics. The machine booted and ran every day for ten hours or more. After breaking the system down, we ran HQ-5 video into the Quantum drives and they all performed flawlessly. Although it didn't rain, so moisture wasn't a factor, we did dirt dust the chassis several times. Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances

With the digital disk based camera backs and low-cost digital tape formats I'm not sure how useful it is to take the flyer into the field. It's especially risky if it is your only edit system. So for low-end users it will probably saty studio based and the exteranl bay will facilitate moving it between workstations. The higher end folks that are going to be interested in digital field aquisition are probably willing to pay the extra for a box that will clamp to the back of their existing cameras in place of the old analog tape dockable. They were so happy when the dockable took over from the portable (allowing greater mobility or the reduction of the field crew by 1 person) that I don't see a lot of people wanting to go back to the camera-wired-to-other-box arrangement if there is an alternative. wmc – via Autopilot!

I know it's probably unrealistic to take the thing out into the field – like I want to carry more junk around with me for 10 -20 minutes of video. However, I have to explore all the possibilities. My bosses are technology- gobbling gremlins. If it's new and looks cool to an unknowing client, they'll spring $$ for it. (good thing they don't cruise this forum <G>) I get the benefit of playing with some of the newest and hottest toys (and use them to get some work done in between the tours through my edit suite) I also get the headaches when I have to explain that the newest and greatest $15,000 toy is still in beta test (and then explain what beta is) or pre-release. Or when I have to perform circus acts for potential clients with the all the NLE transition possibilities. Bitter – maybe, bored – no. BarryVedros ISI

James, Well, hey – you can't have the toys without the headaches, eh? I'm just happy I didn't take my linear system down and sell it or some such. The plan was always to work the Flyer until I was confident it coudl handle the work before "mainlining" it. I had originally figured I would be mainly NLE by now, but, if I stick with the Flyer it looks like that may not happen until mid-late '96 if my guess is right (i.e. clean full function 4.1x with necessary third party add-ons for time coded deck control, rendered layer effects, audio editing [or studio 16 integration], clip logging and EDL importe/export …). wmc – via Autopilot!

<<Therefore, the base bay would be $3000 and the one with the LCD face would be $5000.>> And add the price of the Flyer and we're right back where we started from: $8000-$10,000 range. Not to handsome of an upgrade if you already own the Amiga Toaster. Now up on the CIS Internet via AMosaic! Too bad it isn't with AP. Chris Shepard: 030/50 Toaster A2000 & MacIIfx via Emplant.

I know Chuck has had a few inquiries regarding upgrades to Toaster Bay from Amiga owners. NewTek has offered discounts in many areas, so now we want to do the same for the Toaster Bay. Why NOT? Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances

Hi Sam – Checking out your model number and I come up with 8505's and 8250's. Could you give me more info on the 2505, and I get back to you Monday or Tuesday. Finally getting some R&R. Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances
