Greetings, Brethren!
I am just returned from an exciting time in the City of Lost Angels, where I
zipped in to attend the Wavey Awards ceremony, and zipped out with a Wavey
Award myself!
It was for the "Stephen King Book-of-the-Month Club" ad I participated in at
Ball & Chain Productions, and we ( we being Sean Hannon, Jim Bresnahan, and
Chuck Jepson) took the award for "Best Use of Lightwave in a TV Commercial".
This spot was also nominated for "Best Character Animation", which was my main
contribution to the piece. And my work on the Ad Rats cartoon rats with my
partner Bill Chadwick was up for "Best Compositing"! It pays to get your work
out there.
The awards ceremony at the Orpheum Theater was absolutely first-class. Held in
a restored `20s movie palace with a humongous pipe organ, the production values
of the event were on par with the best of them. It was hosted by Penn Gillette
of "Penn & Teller" fame, and he was a riot. Awards were passed out by major
players in the industry: Grant Boucher, John Gross, Walter Williams, and
others. Nominees from all over the world – Japan, Belgium, and the U.S. – got
to see their work projected on the silver screen before a packed house. And
the body of work itself was cutting edge dynamite stuff! It really made me
proud to be in that company. Anyway, I better stop or Tom Patrick will have
nothing new to add in the upcoming VTU article on this event.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Be sure to bring it with you to September's LWToaster
meeting (I want to rub it!<G>). And don't forget to bring a tape of the Stephen
King commercial. My screen isn't quite so big (only 10' x 16') but there'll be
other's there (hopefully) who'll want to see it.
And pass on my congrats to Bill C, Chuck & James. This couldn't have
happened to a better team!

Well, it was fun, but I'd sure hope to see some better forensic
simulations. (As comic relief, they served quite well…..)
Congrats on the Stephen King piece! It was definitely one of the better
ones there.
Personally, I liked some of the compositing stuff by that german(?) group.
Did you see Stuart Ferguson's 'Titans Eternal'?
More like 'Attack of the Bab5 Bitmaps' if you ask me…..
(It was in the Electronic Theatre. I missed it at the Waveys…)
Of course, here I am complaining, and I didn't have the balls to enter the
contest. (Actually, it was more of a timing problem….:^)
