#3D Laser Scanning
6 messages in this thread
I could use a little feedback about the free mesh of a dragon that was posted
last week in library/mesh/projectfiles/free 3d laser model.
What do you all think?
This is a rapidly emerging technology/service in part due to drops in cost. I'm
sure you have all seen the hand-digitizers for under $2000. Thats about one
fifth of what we paid for ours a few years ago. Laser scanners are nice because
for the most part they are automated and produce large amounts of accurate data
much more quickly than any human ever could. Laser Scanners, while still
expensive, have dropped in price dramatically and increased in sophistication
as well.
Is anyone out there interested in 3D scanning?
Greetings
I really like the dragon, especially the one with wings.
Is this a service idea or are you trying to market the scaners themselfs? How
long does it take to scan a model? How much is the scanner? Can this scanner
be used as a regular flat bed type?
I have been looking for a tool in helping me create 3D models of people without
paying $500 per person or thing.

Thanks, The model of the dragon was sculpted in clay and then
digitized. The wings were generated by hand using 3dstudio.

The Digibot II Laser Scanner is for sale and we also offer
full-service model creation for those who don't have the time
or money to purchase there own scanner. It can take from one
hour to twelve hours to scan a model depending on the
complexity. I will E-mail you costs privately. This scanner uses
a red laser beam and a motion platform to "walk" the laser along
an object surface. The scanner records the distance of each
point it samples as it walks across a surface. The points are
sampled in slices or cross sections that can be edited one by
one to generate a perfect hole-less mesh. So no, The scanner
only scans 3D objects.

Our scanner and service would be considered high-end, so
it probably wouldn't meet your cost requirements. However,
we are currently in the process of generating our own CD
of meshes that would be competitively priced and totally
awesome I might add. I will keep you informed. Our service
and scanner is presently marketed toward gaming companies,
engineering CAD/CAM, and other applications such as these.

Please E-mail me costs also. I haven't seen the dragon yet, but will download
it soon.

Hi,
I'd like to have the cost to scan and price for scanner too.
Thanks.
Laser scanning as its cost comes down will be of great interest to us. For
objects
3 inches long to 60" and larger. What of the costs for this range of equipment
and
what is the portability?
Thanks,
Gary
