#OS 3.1 Worth it?

Call anyone recommend the new OS 3.1 for Amiga? Or is this like the new OS 2
for DOS, where making it work isn't worth the effort, and it doesn't work with
everything? I would love to hear some comment on it.

I recomend it for any of the older machines, BIG improvement. If you have 3.0
now, you would have to ask someone else as I upgraded from 2.1.

I have 3.0, and was wondering if it is worth going to 3.1 for $179 (?) From
what I hear, it's worth a try.
I have an Amiga 2000 with an apollo turbo, (28hrz.) and an Amiga 4000. I use
both basically for midi stuff. (Bars and Pipes.)

what do you think of the Apollo? I'm toying with the thought of purchasing the
Apollo 2030-50 and a 16MB SIMM (especially after a favourable review in the
leading German Amiga mag) but I have heard from a shop assistant that it wasn't
good quality.
At the moment I have an Evolution SCSI host adaptor and CSA Mega Midget Racer
68030-33/882-20 with 4MB 32bit memory which I want to replace with the 2030 as
it's got an accelerator, 32bit RAM, and a SCSI-2 host adaptor on board, and
because since the demise of my old 16bit fast memory board I'm going through
some really hard times…

Greetings from an American in Germany!
I am very happy with my Apollo. I was, however, very disappointed with the
documentation, and instructions. I'm no stranger to tricky instalations, but I
had to eventually call a hot line in Germany to ask how to get the damn thing
to work. They gave me a series of instructions that had NOTHING to do with the
booklet that came with the card.
The worse thing that happened was I lost my MemoryMaster 8MB card, as it was
not compatable with the Simm setup on the Apollo board. Still, the board works
very well…(I had to fork out money for 8MB of course for the board…which I
didn't plan on doing.) It takes a little longer to "boot", but works great for
my applications.
Hope that helps. I guess the main thing to find out would be if you would have
any other card conflicts. I must say, when I asked the guy on the hot line if I
might have trouble with my memory master card, he said.."Hmm could be…"

I upgraded my A2000/040 to OS 3.1 as soon as I could get a copy shipped to
me. I installed it and other than a minor problem with the prefs (one needs to
delete the old .prefs files and re-do them for the proper colors) I've had no
problems with it at all. I know dozens of others (using machines from the
A500-A4000) who have also upgraded and are very happy with the upgrade.
Depending on what you're upgrading from, you may loose a few games or a stray
PD utility or two, but it's been practically painless for me and those I've
talked to about it. Good luck!

Okay. I think I'll take a swing at 3.1. I have 3.0, and simply wondered what
the difference could possibly be. Jut as long as it doesn't screw up my
Bars&Pipes.

I upgraded from 2.04 to 3.1 and I think it is well worth it. Some utilities
which work on 2.04 work better on 3.1 and you get Multiview which can use
datatypes to view different file formats, CrossDos that can read and write PC
discs and other goodies. I have not found any utilities which worked on 2.04
that will not run on 3.1 (so far).
OS2 for PCs is a completly different situation. That is an alternative
operating system for the PC by another manufacturer which is competing with
Windows.

I have 3.0, and have been on the road for a while, which is why 3.1 took me by
surprise. I was curious how much better than 3.0 it can possibly be. I was also
afraid it could have been a "Windows" situation, made by another
manufactuer…which thankfully it isn't.
