#os2 background render
4 messages in this thread
I read in the Reference Manual that I should be able to render in the
background of OS2 while I use other programs. However, I can't get this to
work. I've tried changing the desktop screen resolution, rendering from the
dos command line, and using slave mode, but the background rendering still
hangs until I return to the 3DStudio program.
I use an IBM clone PC with a Pentium CPU 90, and a VI-720 PCI VGA graphics card
(Cirrus CL-GD5434 chip) with 2MB ram.
I've been trying to overcome this problem for months.
Thank you for your attention.

Look at file 3dsos2.zip in library 6 (HWare/OpSys). This file describes the
various settings needed to allow 3ds to run under os/2.

Thank you for the reply Larry; however, after making the various setting
changes 3ds4 will still not render in the background on this computer. I
wonder if it is the graphics board that I use? The config.sys shown in the .zip
file doesn't work for my cirrus chip 543x based graphics board. Does your
machine render in the background, and if so what graphics board do you use?
I didn't quite understand the following recommended setting:
Dos_shell=C:\4dos\4dos.com c:\4dos @d:\3ds3\4dos.ini
should I substitute my C:\dos6\dosshell.ini for "4dos.ini", and command.com for
"4dos.com"?

The exact contents of the config.sys file is dependent on your machine
configuration. I would stay with your original config.sys, and look at the
lines at the bottom of the config.sys file from the .zip file dealing with
svga.
It's been a while since I've run 3ds under os/2, but as I remember it, the only
real change in the config.sys file was adding the parameter "/bgexec" to one of
the device lines dealing with the svga device driver. I've never tried a
Cirrus chip set. The ones I've gotten it to work with are a diamond speedstar
and an ATI Graphics Ultra.
Have you tried using the null video driver yet? It's at the bottom (I think)
of the Vibrant list. Using this driver causes 3ds never to go into graphics
mode. You have no idea if anything went wrong, but if desparation calls…
