#3D Smoke IPAS on network
8 messages in this thread
Hi,
I'm having an odd problem with smoke (ver 1.0) when
I render over a network. I get the 'Size' parameter set
where I like it (usally large +-2000), Speed at 0,
and everything looks fine when rendered locally.
When I network render, the size gets scaled down and on
one of my two materials the smake is moving!
I have tried placing the IPAS in a single pathed
directory (network pathed) with other images maps to
no avail. Any ideas on where to look for the problem.
This only happens intermittently on some models. Is there
some sort of config or temporary file created by the IPAS?
Thanks

Hi Kevin,

What version of Vapor are you using? When you rerender the same project file on
the slave machine, but having the machine in Master mode, are the results the
same? Is Vapor_i.axp local to the slave's process directory?

It's (3D) Smoke version 1.0.
All 4 networked machines (in slave) render the material incorrectly, including
the original
master (we use netware lite with each machine mapped as
different drive: D:, E:, etc). They are consistent in the
incorrect scale across all 4 machines!
I rendered from the slave machine that holds the control
files in master mode and the material renders correctly.
It seems to occur only while in slave mode, and not with
every project. I checked and it's the same date and file
size for every version of the SXP file.
It seems to happen more often with large (> 100K faces)
projects which have had a lot of merging going on…
Is there a more current version?
Thanks,

Hi Kevin,

There could be. I'm not sure of the latest version number for smoke. Schreiber
Instruments distributes the Yost Group Boutique of plug-ins. They can be
reached at 1-800-fov-ipas.

I believe there is a 1.0a or 1.1 available that fixes some secondary motion
problems.

This sounds like a scaling problem, the project file saved to the network
directory does not include any changes made in the scaling control (ctrlU). If
you have been merging stuff, and loading from DXF have you, st any time
switched units etc. in this box. If the scale of your model is not 1 then slave
renders of _any_ .SXPs with a size parameter will look different to a render
made in workstation mode from the original project.

My scaling is 1.0. Someone suggested another possible
source for the problem, my model was created from
state plane coordinates and my units are way outside of
single precision bounds (x = ~600,000, y = ~400,000)
which always causes flukey problems. I am going to
slide everything towards 0,0 and try again. I don't
have any other ideas…
Thanks for the response

Yes that sounds like another possibility, it's a good idea to bring everything
within bounds before importing to 3DS if you start working outside of the
envelope horrible things can happen to the geometry.
