#Win 95 Question
11 messages in this thread
Hi everyone,
Ok I did it. I got a copy of Win95. Now…If I install this beast…How would I
run 3DS, or could I ??? Do I want Win 95 or should I just return it and by NT
since Max is going to run on it. OR could I keep both the NT and the Max. Could
I get some help on that. What would you do?? Thanx in advance.
-Kouros.
I off to buy '95 tommorrow, so any advice on R4 and '95 would be helpful!
Anyone got it running yet?
Matt 🙂

I can't see any reason to go with Win 95. NT for me.

Who says $200 million dollars on marketing is a waste? <G>
Kouros, before buying a new operating system you must ask yourself…
1. Why do I need it?
2. Will it make me more productive?
3DS4 is DOS based
3DS MAX is for WIN NT

Hi Ralph,
How are you. Acctually, I bought a copy just to l@@k. It will most likely go on
my son's machine…and at the same time I was wondering would I/shouls I…
want to…bla…bla.. bla. But as usual I got my answers ASAP, thanx to you
guys. OK, I'm off to get NT.
-Kouros.
I have NT with the shell, and I just replaced it with Win 95. NT is stable, but
hardware support is abysmal, and it can't manage hardware resource conflicts
very well. I couldn't load the operating system for days because it crashed
before loading because of device conflicts. So don't believe all the hype you
are likely to here on this forum for NT. There are a lot of problems with the
current system. I'm waiting for the new interface not a paste on and plug and
play support.
Just as a bit of info, I don't believe that plug and play will be a part of the
new WinNT- just the new 95 shell. Since NT is modular, it's much easier to
replace the user interface than it is the underlying hardware interface
architecture.
The next version of NT will not be the Cairo project, rather an upgrade to
3.51. Cairo is many moons away<g>.

Yes, that's exactly my point. NT will not be ready for primetime until it gets
to the point where I can still you my scanners, digitizers, and video capture
cards and handle them elegantly. As you say that will be many moons away.
Rico:
I haven't gotten into NT all that much yet, and there certainly _has_ been some
"hype" regarding it. But, I hardly think that saying that it can't deal w/ an
unstable/un-optimized set of hardware is a valid criticism (it _does_ come w/
a list of compatible hardware). As has been pointed out, NT currently does not
support Plug-N-Play. And, I've heard of instances where P-N-P has caused it's
own set of problems (specifically where an NIC was altering it's IRQ assignment
every time the machine was booted).
Provided it is given bedrock hardware, as an OS, NT is _stable_. That, (and
its support for hardware 3D accelerators for us, and its security features for
corporate types) beyond any other reason, is what makes it so attractive.

For me, I want a operating system that allows me to work in one environment
without rebooting because it works with all of my hardware and 3ds, and it also
allows for 3d acceleration. I'm willing to give up a degree of stability and
security I could care less about. Maybe by the time I can afford dual alpha
systems vendors would have decided to release drivers for NT then again an
alpha system would probably support less hardware then the current system.
Microsoft has a lot of evangelizing to do, I don't see how its going to be
done.

It's a breeze. Just press F8 at boot up right after the beep and choose
Command Prompt and you'll be at DOS 7. You can then run it like you always
have. It will run under W95 but slowly and w/ less memory, so why bother?
