#HD confusion
7 messages in this thread
Can someone please clarify something for me.
I've got a 2000 w/ 2090A controller a 506 as my system drive and a 100MB
SCSI as my data area.
Is it possible to format the SCSI as 1 partition under FFS or do I need to
a DH2: under old system and say SC1: under FFS?
I tried a single partition (DH2) as FFS and it almost seems to work. But i
keep getting gurus and after reboot the disk icon shows DH2:DOSA uh the A
is in reverse video. After a hard reboot and manual reMount the disk
again appears fine for a while then we go for the reboot trip again.
You have to use a mountlist in the devs directory. And you must mount the
scsi drive in your startup-sequence. This will let you use the FFS on the
hole disk. Also download assigndevs. This will remove the automounted DH2:.

John,
Thanks. I may actually have found a use for a small partition after all
but after repartition disk I was still getting random crashes. Appears to
be a bad spot on SCSI.
Now my question is how can I map it out (kinda wondered why drive showed up
with no defect list).

Larry,
No guarantees it will work, but try the program SFMT.ARC in LIB 14,
it will tell the SCSI drive to do a low level format and map out bad blocks
as it finds them.
Some drives will support this…and some won't. Just make sure you
have a good backup of the drive before you try this.
Don't be surprised if it takes 30 or 40 minutes to work, depending
on the size of the drive and the way the manufacturer implemented the low
level format command.
BTW, if you wish, the entire drive can be FFS but to do that you
must not PREP the drive….simply create a mountlist entry for it and mount
it.
Don
don,
thanx. Will give it a try. As I said in crossing msg, working with 2090A
and Quantum 105.
?With the no PREP FFS trick do you still RES 0 and 1?
lGlamb
Larry,
NO…you only need to mount the RESx: partitions when you PREP the
drive. If you don't want the drive to automount, don't PREP it. Then, the
entire drive is available for FFS.
If the drive has previously been PREP'ed, you'll have to mount and
format it before it won't automount. Your mountlist would start at
cylinder 0 and go to the highest numbered cylinder.
In other words, if you have a drive with 700 cylinders, your
mountlist would show a LowCyl number of 0 and a HighCyl number of 699.
Don
Don,
The drive should still be PREPed, in order to have the proper RDBs in the
first cylinder. In order to do without the small OFS partition, all that is
necessary is to start the FFS partition on the same cylinder as the OFS
partition starts, but to not high level format the OFS partition.
