#WINGS Progress
18 messages in this thread
I'd like to get some Feedback on other player's progress in WINGS. I got
the game on Sunday and so far I've made it to Captain with 27 kills and
receipt of the 1st medal. It's mid November 1916. How does this go against
others impressions? getting all 5 medals for CGW seems pretty du
John, I am about at about the same position with 30 kills and two medals. I
am eagerly awaiting my first encounter with the "Baron". His first kill was
on Sept 17th, an F.E.2b "pusher (the same type that shot dowm Max
Immelmann). His first kill over a fighter plane was on on November 23rd, a
D.H.2. – also a "pusher". Maybe I can get him before he gains much more
experience. He's not a very fancy flyer I've been told, but he is flying
the new Albatross DII!
My kill rate would be higher but I have had quite a few victories snatched
away by my fellow pilots. Now if I got rid of some of the competion . . .?
Jees! I been watching "The Blue Max" too many times!
BTW watch out for April of 1917 – BLOODY APRIL!
-Paul-
I made it up to 49 kills before I died during "Bloody April" (4/17). Had
two medals and was a Lieutenant Colonel at the time. Hope you live to
experience it…
Any tips on how you guys are racking up so many kills? I'm not having much
luck. Usually my pilots only rack up two or three kills before they deep
six. Any tips would be appreciated.
Barry,
Anytime you have just made significant progress exit (and save) the
game. In reel2 there is a file "pilot.dat". Copy this file to another
location. The next time you die just copy this pilot.dat file back to reel2
and you will be alive again to give it another try.
That will keep you from having to replay the same missions over and over
again. But to get kills and stay alive remember this: Flying straight and
level in combat is an invitation to the grim reaper. When firing lead the
enemy planes. I can't even see the the enemy (hidden behind the my head or
the guns) when I am getting most of my hits. If your gun jams zig zag and
climb. The germans don't seem to like to attack from below. And if you make
it to April 1917 – Pray! -Paul-
Paul: thanks for the tips on how to survive the early going in Wings. I
seem to be getting much better. — Barry C.
You might just try resetting the Ami upon being killed or having a failed
mission. Again, save your successful mission. I've failed two straf's and
now have flown 128 misions with 153 confirmed kills. The music is now
getting a little old. It's June 29, 1917. (I survived BLOODY APRIL!! -by
resetting) 🙂 I know others that have done better, but here's my
progress:
DATE RANK MEDALS MISSIONS KILLS 10/20/16 MAJ 3 59
54 11/21/16 MAJ 4 68 60 12/12/16 LtCol 4 74
66 01/26/17 LtCol 4 84 73 03/14/17 LtCol 5 93
80 04/19/17 LtCol 5 105 106 05/25/17 LtCol 5 117
131 06/29/17 LtCol 5 128 153
I've now shot down 60 singles 93 doubles, & 25 balloons. Have not yet run
into triple deckers.
Abilities are:
Flying Knight
Craftsman II
Master (Shooting ability)
Steel Fortress (ability to take shots)
Happy gaming

I have to admit I reset the Amiga last night rather than accept a fatal
Wings kill — my own. I did what fighter jocks call "get stupid." I tried
to do a 180-degree loop without enough clearance. A few seconds into the
manuver, I could almost hear Farrah speaking to me, "make sure you have
enough ground clearance for acrobatics!" Well, I didn't have enough room
and I slammed into the ground. Rather than take the death like a man, I
shut off the machine and went to bed, thereby saving my Granite Gut I and
Sharpshooter I ratings, not to mention my captain's rank and 33 kills. Oh
well, all is fair in war, right? Thanks for your tip. For an arcade
shoot'em up, Wings sure is addictive. — Barry CC.
Barry,
Are you sure it was a loop? Loops start with a climb…kinda hard to
hit the ground, unless you're our of airspeed. Perhaps you were trying to
do a 'split-S'… roll 180 _then_ pull the stick into your lap.
Victor A. Wagner, Jr.
Yeah, I intended for it to be a loop. I was fairly close to the ground,
tried to go vertical, and then realized I would never be able to pull it
off. Pushed backback on the stick to try and level off and somehow just
slammed the sucker into the ground. So much for Top Gun school. — Barry C.
When flying balloon busting missions, immediately change your heading. The
game usually has you flying straight into "Archie". I spend a lot of time
circling around. When I engage I try to stay with the German plane and
fire whenever possible. Practice deflection shooting… leading the target
so the German flies directly into your stream of bullets.
As you get better, you'll have some missions where you kill three or four
Fokkers by yourself. As you can see, your kill total will go up in a hurry
at that rate.
Thanks for the tip about how to survive in Wings. I continue to get better
and better.
When going for balloons, kill off the escorts first, then take out the
balloons. On a bombing mission, just avoid the AA guns, when you get near
your target, let the AA guns sight you then move in and bomb your target
after the AA guns release their volley.
If you really want more advice, try the Flight Sim/Combat section of the
Gamers Forum, their are a bit more people there who can help you.
They use Amigas there also. 🙂

Thanks for the Wings tip. I'm up to about 20 kills now, and I have become
so brazen that sometimes I jus tt wade right in for head-on kills.
Sometimes I sustain some damage, but hey, that's war. Thanks again. —
Barry C.
No problem. There's a good exchange of tips on playing Wings! in the
Gamers Forum in the Flight/Combat Sim. section if your ever in need.

What combination of attributes do you guys usually give to new pilots??
More flying ability?? More firing accuracy?? More mech?? I can't seem to
find the right combination to start with to try and keep my pilots a more
fighting chance to survive.
I give enough point to get my flying ability up to a Clay Pigeon I, my
shooting to Marksman I, and I split the remaining points 10/5 between
mechanical and stamina, respectively.
Actually, I usually died from mid-air crashes until I finally stopped being
so aggressive. Another thing I learned is to not bank 90 degrees when
turning. Sixty degrees ior so seems to provide a better turning rate and
also allow your on screen head to visually track the Huns.
Am in Bloody April now (much like the SPI game!) I'm a Lt. Col with the DSO
and 68 kills. It is rough. Let you know if I make it through. I do get
annoyed when the CO calls me a tenderfoot especially at my rank!!
