Here's the news blip for Bubble3D.
BUBBLE3D – Allows you to realistically simulate many varieties of bubbles. You
control the speed, size, path, and origin of the bubbles.
Any 3D Studio object may be used as the bubbles. BUBBLE3D uses random,
linear and power law functions to control the bubbles, giving you many
different looks. By using the various controls you can create a wide
variety of effects, including bubbles in a fishtank, a glass of champagne or a
burst from a scuba diver.

The demo of real-time data input you gave was awesome. Can I have a few brain
cells? It's so nice to have quality support for the ticky tacky techno-
details. Your future looks bright and shiny… ( an auto-ref map on your
future? )

What kind of material is used for the bubbles?? Is it a transparent material or
user definable. Could this process also be used to create a column of black
smoke rising up?

Bubble3D can take its material from two sources:
1) from the bounding box hosting Bubble3D, so any material you can
design will show up.
2) from the source object to be used as the bubbles, so the
bubbles can have more than one material if you desire.
I guess either case would be user-definable. 🙂 I've never tried to
simulate a column of black smoke (been spoiled by the Yost group's
smoke) but I guess it could be done: a large number of bubbles, large
sized bubbles, fed in from bottom, w/ transparent material applied.
Thanks for the reply, it certainly sounds worth a shot. Can you give
me the info and on how to order it and will it run on v2? I'm
looking for billowing smoke such as from a burning building.
Billowing smoke is just around the corner. We're doing smoke and fire
particle systems for the next IPAS Boutique… available this spring.
Great, I'm looking forward to it as most of work uses these two items.

Important info: Bubble3D will NOT run on v2. I hope you're on

Bubbles could work great to simulate some types of smoke, like the one
produced by burning car tyres or other pretoleum based plastics or
products (hint to those doing car accidents :). In that case, the
smoke "structure" could be easily reduced to groups of bubbles
forming a column. Moreover, if the bubbles work with the lights, you
can get a extremely realistic effect by applying a warm, fire light
from the base of the smoke column. You can see that effect in Akira,
but those were done by hand 🙂

yes! What about Robot Carnival? Hey, and they say that the Disney
actually knows how to animate <g> After watching Akira for the Nth
time, Aladdin seems to me black and white 🙂 Well, I'm exagerating.
Seriously, Aladdin is awesome but, well, I just can't stand people
who talk about Japanese animation and don't know a think about it,
saying that all is computer generated and photocopied stuff.
Ignorants! <g> Still, I can't believe how they achieve that line
quality in Akira, the kinetics… that movie is alive! And not to
talk about the mechanic objects. Gee, this guys don't need an SGI.
Where did they get the patience and the talent to move all those
objects with that precision and that unsurpassed realism?
If you like Akira, check out the manga volumes. I have some black and
white japanese originals and the full (US colorized -you did a good
work) European version. The ink drawings are awesome. I love all arts
and styles, but what this guys (in this case, Katshuhiro Otomo) do in
their mangas is out of this world: 600 pages a month with that
quality??? Do they draw with both hands and their feet!? Also the
elagance, the curve, the movement… all part of a marvellous
centenary tradition. it's not strange that VanGogh copied so much
stuff from original Japanese illustration.
Of course, I'm talking about high quality, not the cheap stuff.

video stores might rent it. I rented it from the Wherehouse. Blockbuster may be
worth a try.
The best place is a theater. The images will make your eyes go krazy. I think
that they have classified the movie as a hard drug, specially the last part
(evolutionary theories? god? just fun? I still can't understand it <G>)
However, I am afraid that you can only watch it on video (anyway, I'm sure that
you have one of those home theaters there with a 34" screen 🙂 For rent in your
favorite video store (don't get in Blockbuster, help pop and mom stores!
Moreover, BB don't carry Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer -and other
censorable pieces!)

ps. Talking about movies… I watched an european movie last week (cable) and
one of the nude scenes was cutted!!! And it was really innocent, nothing like
the -IMHO stupid, worthless- Basic Instinct. Is this normal here or what?

Yes Ana, its a strange society, you can go out and buy a Uzi easily but you
can't watch a sensitive nude scene on regular cable. And to make matters worse
the X-rated channels are disgusting and trashy.

I just have bought a Pionner LaserDisc with both PAL and NTSC format. Pretty
good equipment. I love movies. In fact, I divide my income in movies, big
format books, music (both concerts and CDs :), computer equipment, and renting

The 'Criterion collection' is a series of laserdiscs put out by
Voyager. They're nearly all in widescreen format and most have supplemental
material on the disc such as behind the scenes stills, storyboards, etc. Some
even have a separate audio track with running commentary by people directly
involved with the making of the film. Simply put… very cool! Sounds like your
new to laserdiscs, and if thats the case, your in for some fun! There's tons of
stuff out there thats only available on disc, and it seems like they're comming
out with another special – widescreen – extra footage – behind the scenes –
directors cut – edition every week! You need to find a good laserdisc shop, but
be carefull how much money you bring, you might walk out with your arms full,
but flat broke.
There's a great Laser only video shop in LA that might be able to send
you a catalogue and they carry everything. It's called Dave's Video in Studio
City , CA and their phone is (818)760-3472. Also it sounds like Greg has a
Voyager catalogue, maybe you can get their phone # from him and have them send
you out a Criterion catalogue and pricelist.

I _do_ mean details) about laser disks, sources, etc. Specifically,

I stopped going to blockbuster when I heard they were refusing to stock
"the last temptation of Christ". I wonder if they ever came to their senses. (I
guess not, if they're censoring videos now!)
Oh well. There's plenty of video stores to chose from.

The "Last Temptation of CHrist" was a big bore and only the controversy made
people want to see it. I started watching it and got so bored I never finished
looking at it. Had better things to do.

Let's form a club! I just can't stand the McDonalds "virginal family"
way of life! (as you now, BB CEO was a former McDonalds executive).
Sorry but I am more in the depressive side of the world, with Lynch
as a Pater Noster <g>
One more thing, you can't get a good real movie but you can rent
hundreds of stupid "comedy", "action", "romance" and "thriller"
movies all filled with stupid girls all nude doing stupid love
scenes.
And not to talk about the theaters! How I can see a movie if I have
someone eating grilled chicken nuggets with some short of sweet and
sour sauce in my back. And what about the continous sound of nachos
crunching all arround. I remember when I saw "The Wedding Banquet"…
argh! Each time the guys kissed the whole cinema start to mumble and
grumble and say "buagh!" or "arghh". And when something funny
happened, everyone start to laugh and applause as krazy. Then a lot
of mumbles and rumbles. Half of the dialog got lost in a ton of
strange and abnormal sounds. The other half were in subtitles so I
could read it. The solution, now each time I want to go to see a
movie I go on Wenesday at 4PM. BTW, I loved "TWB" the second time <g>
And what about the TV? The only thing I see here, when I have the
time, are some quality movies (very rare 🙂 and the Mistery Science
Theater 3000 at midnight (at Comedy Central), but that's me, I love
cheesy Z-movies and I think that the writers of the dialogs are as
krazy as me.
That was a hilarious message, Ana<big grin>. Thanks for the
pick-me-up! I know just how you feel. The only movie I have seen in
the theatre in the last 4 years was Jurassic Park (for obvious
reasons, and I can't *wait* for the Laser disk to be released), and
that was at the prodding of my buddy RalphF. It wasn't a bad
experience, really, but I feel we were lucky that evening. In the
meantime, I have built a small but effective home theatre and when
playing Laser Disks in letter-box format with the nice surround-sound
it suits me just fine. One more nacho crunch or cigarette smoke
hassle and I think I would have flipped!

Akira is available in a laser widescreen letterbox version, catalog #CC1294L.
Digital sound, 1.85:1 aspect ratio, CAV, 124 minutes, 6 sides, by Voyager.
The suggested list price <g> is $124.95. Should be right there on the shelf
between "Airport" and "Always"!

I don't own any of the hard copy volumes of Akira, but have seen quite a few of
them. Real popular here in San Francisco, and the really good bookshops and
comic shops will usually have a good copy or two lying around.
I just met a guy whose a cell animator at Collossal, were going to get togther
and talk shop real soon. He seems like a really cool guy, and I've always
wanted to combine 3D and traditional animation in one of my peices.

They cost a lot (at least in Spain) and they are REAL volumes. I mean, a lot of
BIG sized volumes with hundreds of pages each. However, I think it is money
well spent 🙂
Regarding 2d and 3d… that was the main reason I get into 3ds. Still working
