#Mitre joints
13 messages in this thread
Thanks to all for the help. Mission accomplished. I now have the mitres
just where I want them. This sure is a huge package! Lots of things to
learn.
Now for a new question…
Does anyone know of source for examples that are distributed on CD-ROM? I
learn very well by example, and am sure a CD-ROM full will further my
education. Also, what do people think is a typical "learning curve" time?
Once again, thanks to all for the help.

The World Building Toolkit that comes shipped with 3D Studio is full of
examples. If you didn't get it you should contact your dealer.
Syndesis is selling one called 3D-ROM. It has 500 or so meshes on it, and
lots of tileable texture maps. I haven't seen it personally, but it sounds
great, cost is @$200, I think. John Foust, are you ready to jump in?
Viewpoint, Acuris, Tom Knight, etc… are model builders who sell models on
a single or package basis and will custom create models from your specs, as
will many animation consultants/independents/companies on this forum. If
you need highly accurate models fast, this can be a cost effective way to
go. And it's not _really_ cheating <g>.
As far as learning curve goes, I think with a package this large the curve
never ends.

It looks great! I picked one up at John's booth at Siggraph, the objects
are very useful! Combine this with the World Creating Toolkit and you'll
have everything you'll need!
Not a bad way of showing off the translator, John!

I thought I hand-delivered that 3D-ROM to you!

Nope, I stood in line at your over-crowded booth to get it! Actually,
you did say that you came by our booth previously, but I either was
busy or not there, so you're half right! You tried!
Great disk!

Tileable maps? Are these seamlessly tileable? I'm still looking for
a CD with lots of those — I got one offer in the mail that looked
promising, but it was around $300.

Sure are! All custom made for 3D mapping.

Give us a call at (414) 674-5200 for info about our 3D-ROM, a CDROM
collection of more than 500 models in 3DS format.
John: Is there a listing or a text file that lists the meshes on your CD-ROM?
I would like to see the list to decide on the purchase.
Thanks
Unfortunately, our agreement with the people who assembled the data
prevents us from handing out such a list. They're (justifiably)
worried about making it easier to rip off the data on the disc. I'll
be uploading more sample pictures in a few days, in thumbnail form.
We're also looking at providing a low-cost manual and demo floppy,
along with a coupon for a discount on the disc. Even at 9 point type
in two columns, the description of the models on the disc takes up 30
pages in the manual!

That's a shame it comes down to this! I was hoping to get an ascii list
just for searching quickly through the hundreds of meshes there! That
explains why it isn't on the disk.

After about a man-year of time invested in re-arranging this data, we had
plenty of nightmares about dens of unscrupulous CDROM makers, ripping off our
currently unique disc. On the bright side, we do allow BBSes to place the disc
online, unlike most other discs.

Maybe I'm thick or something but how would having a list of the models enable
one to rip off the data? What I had in mind is something like:
I. Cars:
Camaro
Ford Pickup
Porsche 944
Mustang
Dodge Van
2. Fruit:
Apple
Orange
Banana
3. Furniture
Chair
Desk
Table
This would give some idea what models are on the CD and would make a great
sales tool. For instance: I need a carrot and a yard tractor for two projects
I'm working on now. I'f I knew you had a yard tractor on the CD or even a full
blown Peterbuilt tractor I would go for the CD as soon as my contract is
signed. But if you are telling me that you have a CD and it has some music on
it but you can't tell me what music selections there are because it's secret
then I can't see buying it as a surprize package. A book like the Corel Draw
CD-ROM guide is invaluable for my clients to browse through but without at
least a listing of the contents I probably wouldn't have purchased it in the
first place. Another problem I have experienced with clip art in the past is
the files on the disk were compressed with file names like PICT01; PICT02;
PICT03 etc. With no translation or listing it was a nightmare to use and I
swore I would never invest in clipart again without knowledge of the content.
Just a point of view from a potential customer.
