Hi,
I have a couple of 'stupid' questions of the gods.
One technical, another philosophical
1. I need to put into a model a fairly complex roof
lots of faces , lots of intersections
All I have is Elevations to work from (no plan)
I have the building in though…(dxf available)
being a newbie…where do I start?
I can't just draw a line in 3d editor for the eaves and build from there
I can't work in the 2d shaper for the ridges
(probably part of my problems is being so damm autocad literate)
Please … can you give me a quick suggestion on how to proceed
you don't need to give me all the answers (I'll sweat those)
but just point me down the correct road.
I could do this in autocad and dxf it …but I figured this would be a good
way to learn all my editing options.
second question
How neat do you create your model?
By this I mean, where two faces meet…is there a common segment?
In my case I am wondering about the roof. Do I need to create a valley
or can I just let one plane clip the other (by letting it run a little wild) ?
For a non architectural example
you need to put an arrow thru someone's head…but it's one of those
fake arrows ..two piece with a clip. do you
a. locate a shaft thru his head and ignor the entry exit points
b. build two pieces and carefully graft them to each side..creating
common intersecting segments as needed?
by being neat do you really same much rendering time?
are there advantages to being neat vs slapping it together?
will your ass get bit by bad modeling practices?

You can draw the gable rake in the Shaper and loft it the length of the ridge
in the Lofter. If the roof has the same gable at each end but the ridge takes a
90 degree angle (or any angle), just create a path in the Shaper and
Path/Get/Shaper in the Lofter. Set path steps to 0 and loft the gable rake.
Very often if I have dormers, I just make them longer(ridge) than necessary
and let them run wild in the attic(geez, that sounds like fun!). The valleys
will take care of themselves.
Just drive the arrow in one ear and let it exit the other!

Ted's reply is true enough that, unlike some renderers, 3DS will correctly
render intersections. BUT if you want to use shadows and reflections it is
really important to take care over the construction and placement of objects. I
think the manual will give you chapter&verse but essentially the realler you
want it to look, the realler you have to build it! <g>
